AWARDS

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION

supported by

Professor Harry McQuillan, Chief Executive Officer, Community Pharmacy CHARLES TAIT

The Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy Practice is an accolade which is awarded each year to a pharmacy professional, who has made a significant contribution to the profession, and this year’s recipient, Charles Tait, embodies all of the qualities that it seeks to recognise.

Charles is approaching a landmark 40 years spent in the profession – almost exclusively within the community sector. His early years were spent in Boots in Union Street in Glasgow before moving firstly to Sauchiehall Street and then to a managerial role in East Kilbride. During this time Charles had a spell as a project manager working on pharmacy refits and it was this work that was to spark his now encyclopaedic knowledge of both

Scottish and other pharmaceutical regulations.

Following his managerial position, Charles became heavily involved in pharmacy politics, particularly in Ayrshire & Arran. His contribution led to him chairing the Area Pharmaceutical Committee and Pharmacy Contractor Committee for more than 20 years, gaining the trust and respect of intra and inter-professional healthcare representatives.

At a national level Charles was one of the original members elected to the Scottish Pharmacy Board of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, serving as a regular attender of and contributor to Community Pharmacy Scotland’s General Council. Throughout his career he has always

advocated integrated working across all settings within the profession to deliver cohesive pharmaceutical care and has worked hard to established effective working relationships with Chief Pharmaceutical Officers and Directors of Pharmacy.

‘I really cannot describe how I feel. I have accepted this award on the basis that it is the highest accolade that can be awarded by your fellow professionals and it can only ever be matched by the faith and trust that our patients put in us and that is what makes being a pharmacist worthwhile.’ CHARLES TAIT

‘Charles’ contribution to young students, pre-registration students and early years pharmacy development over the past three decades should not go unrecognised. It is testament to the regard in which he is held that many

of his mentees still seek his counsel and are enriched by the unbiased, considered and reasoned advice that they are given.’ PROFESSOR HARRY MCQUILLAN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, COMMUNITY PHARMACY SCOTLAND

‘Supporting the Scottish Pharmacist Awards is invaluable for us. It would be incredible to be able to measure how many young pharmacists have been motivated to do extraordinary things that they may not have previously considered simply by attending the awards. We use the awards as both an opportunity to give back to our customers and as time to spend networking with them.’
