Q: What are some of the lessons you learned along the way?

A: I learned to take risks. Because no matter how bad or good things got, there would always be tomorrow and other opportunities and challenges ahead. I also learned to trust my instincts and to surround myself with good people, and never stop learning.

Also, respect all individuals and treat everyone fairly. Reward good work with praise and empower people to do their jobs. When you do, they will surprise you and exceed your expecta- tions.

Q: What is your business philosophy, i.e. what words do you live by on a daily basis?

A: Always do the right thing. Be honest, ethical and moral. Burn no bridges, make friends with everyone you encounter, and help people as much as you can... and have fun and make some money!

Q: What’s have you found to be the best way to keep a competitive edge?

A: Read, read, read, and then read some more. The more you know, the more valuable and well-rounded you are. Be a sponge and stay up-to-date on national news, world affairs, industry news and events, and community happenings.

Q: What was the best decision you’ve made in your career - and your biggest career regret?

A: Best decision was to start from scratch a brand new desti- nation management business (GEP Philly) in 2001. It grew to 11 full time employees and $4 million a year in sales within 5 years. The company was made up of a fantastic team who worked together flawlessly to deliver superior service to our clients. Through hard work, persistence and a commitment to excellence, we established a sterling reputation which was recognized via multiple industry awards.

My worst decision was leaving Rosenbluth Travel (I was VP Marketing at the time) right before they became a behemoth

global travel agency. I took a risk and moved to Connecticut to join a start-up company that failed within two years.

Q: What do you like best about this industry?

A: Serving people, making them happy, and creating WOW experiences. If you don’t like people, pick a different profes- sion.

Q: Who has been your best mentor and why?

A: My father John (now deceased). He was my biggest cheer- leader. He called me Champion and Golden Son, and filled me with confidence. He built me up and taught me the glass is half full, and to focus on “can”, not “can’t”.

Q: Of which award or honor that you’ve received are you most proud?

A: Being recognized by my MPI peers as Supplier of the Year. Q: What goals have you set for yourself moving forward?

A: To travel around the world and speak to as many groups as possible so I can pass on words of wisdom as an elder statesman. If I can help make a positive difference I won’t consider my life a waste.

Finally, what advice would you offer someone just starting out in the meetings business?

A: Get involved. Join as many industry associations and groups as you can, and then volunteer on as many commit- tees as possible. Attend local, regional and national events to network with your peers, and to enhance your skills and knowledge through the accredited classes and sessions offered. If you do those things, you will meet life-long friends, create powerful business relationships, and position yourself for future success - and happiness.
