MOTORING

Car Share? No thanks

Thanks to rising fuel prices, growing environmental conscience and a comical TV show featuring Peter Kay, more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon and sharing the daily commute to work with friends and colleagues.

But if you’ve ever experienced car sharing, you’ll know it sometimes isn’t all it’s cracked up to be; particularly if you’re stuck with a passenger from hell.

Annoying passengers are said to be one of drivers’ major distractions. From nervous backseat drivers to know-it-all human satnavs, what seems like a sensible idea of sharing a car journey can actually mean you getting to work more worked up than if you’d tackled a gridlocked motorway at 8am on a Monday morning.

Before you commit to a car share agreement, make sure you don’t get trapped with one of these light- hearted categories of passengers - or worse, become one.

The Chatterbox We all know a chatterbox: constant questioning when you’re trying to concentrate on the road; talking over the radio; or generally filling the journey with nonsensical chatter. You need the patience of a saint or selected hearing to cope with them. If you’re not a morning person, speaking to people before 12pm can already be a struggle without being talked at against your will for the entire way.

They might make the journey go quicker but that’s only because you’re counting down the minutes until peace and quiet resumes

The Backseat Driver You’re driving along minding your own business and then you hear it – a smug eye roll followed by incessant tutting and a sarcastic comment from a backseat driver who thinks they know best. Hands up how many people have threatened to get out and abandon the car. Partners are the worst culprits

while women are more likely to retaliate to comments from backseat drivers. From wincing when you pull out of a junction to holding on for dear life when you take a bend (slightly) faster than they would, their overbearing righteousness can get you all in a spin.

The best thing to do is to avoid giving them a lift at all costs; if you can’t then lay down the law from the start. It’s your car, you’re driving and you know what you’re doing. If they don’t like it they can drive themselves or walk.

The Human Satnav No matter what the in-car SatNav says or how well you know the route, this person always chirps up with a quicker, more direct route that you can take.

Warranties

Nicknamed Shortcut (enter name here), these passengers’ routes often lead you astray into quiet cul- de-sacs and undesirable backroads for the purpose of saving precious time. Follow your instincts and the route you know to get you there on time without adding on extra mileage or doing a three-point-turn in the middle of some unknown road with other drivers looking at you with less compassion than if you’d driven over their foot.

The Too Hot Too Cold Fair enough, some of us are nesh and some get nauseous when travelling. But we’ve all got the same body temperature.

Those passengers that are forever fiddling with the air con, opening and closing windows and loosening and tightening their clothing can be a real distraction when moaning about the temperature. You can’t please everybody but finding common ground between Baltic and the Sahara is difficult to come by. Plus, you don’t want to feel like an unwelcoming driver for being stingy with the air-con even though it’s sub-zero outside. Most passengers will be

courteous and shiver or sweat until you finally take the hint and change up the temperature dial.
