WHAT’S ON

On this night of a thousand stars

A tango between unconditional love and a lust for success, the Endellion Theatre Company are proud to bring a South American tale to the people of South Yorkshire this April as they perform their version of the hit musical, EVITA.

array of accomplished performers, producers and choreographers will work with an 18-piece orchestra to bring Eva’s story to life in Endellion’s typical high production value.

A Cinema in Buenos Aires, July 26 1952. News breaks of the untimely death of the Champion of the Descamisados, Eva Peron, First Lady of Argentina, aged just 33. Acclaimed Newcastle actress,

To celebrate 40 years since the multi-award winning Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical’s West End debut in 1978, the Endellion performers will be setting the stage at the Theatre Impromptu in Thurlstone to tell the true story of Little Eva Peron as they relive her journey from the provincial streets of Junin to Argentina’s presidential Pink House - La Casa Rosada. Created especially for the production, the Theatre Impromptu is, as the name suggests, a theatre within a space – or rather the grade II listed St Saviour’s Church to the north of Penistone. The perfect setting for the legend of the Spiritual Leader of the Argentine people.

Based on a concept by the Royal Shakespeare Company and their tours during the 70s, the idea for an impromptu theatre came from Endellion’s director, Jonathan Walker-Kane who was working in Newcastle theatres during the RSC tours.

At a cost of £40,000, the church will be transformed into a performance space thanks to designs by Peter Miles and Simon Lord. All pews and furniture will be removed before flooring, seating, staging and West End standard lighting and music equipment are brought in. They even have nine caravans and a marquee in the church car park for changing facilities.

The theatre is set around a thrust stage where three sides of the stage seep into the audience. The

Fiona Walker, steps into Eva’s iconic blonde twist and glamorous persona for the second time having previously played the role at Sunderland Empire Theatre. With a state of mourning across the nation, the musical takes us back through Eva’s life as narrated by Che Guevara, played by Sheffield’s Matthew Walker. Having dreamed of being an actress, watch as Eva travels to Buenos Aires with her first love and tango singer, Agustin Magaldi, played by Endellion regular, Robert Flewitt.

And Oh What a Circus her life becomes.

Matthew’s lead role as Che sees him sing us through Eva’s rise from normal Argentine girl to the country’s most powerful and influential woman, as set to Lloyd Webber and Rice’s legendary soundtrack which will be conducted by musical director, Robert Owen. Surrounded by the rubble of the 1944 San Juan earthquake, watch as Fiona emerges as a philanthropic, caring diamond who falls into the arms of ambitious military colonel, Juan Peron. Peron, played by Mark Holmes, also from Sheffield, croons his way to the president’s job with Eva by his side.

Mark and Fiona’s effortless partnership authentically tells of the competitive couple and their rise through the power ranks with a cut throat and ruthless attitude often hidden from the public eye. Sing along in sadness as Peron’s Mistress

warbles out the hit Barbara Dickson song, Another Suitcase Another Hall, as sung by Sheffield-born supporting actress Gina Townend as the mistress with no name. Eva’s a lady with potential. She hopes and prays for a better world.

But in the end, will the price of fame be too much?

As Fiona leaves the audience with mixed emotions of Eva’s true life, the Endellion Theatre Company say Don’t Cry for Me Argentina in Thurlstone this April.
