PETS Is your rabbit a With Debbie Fryer of Pets are Pals

As we hop into another season and the weather starts to warm up, the Easter Bunny isn’t the only rabbit to make an appearance this spring. Now is the time for rabbits and other small animals to breed and we tend to see a flurry of furry friends appear in late spring/early summer. Rabbits are only pregnant for 31 days and their babies are ready to leave mum’s side after just eight weeks.

A popular choice for families, it is important to understand the basics of caring for rabbits before deciding to go on a hunt for one. Rabbits, like guinea pigs, are also known as fibrevores which means they eat large amounts of

fibre-rich hay which makes up the majority of their diet. However, a balanced diet and correct feeding plan helps keep them fit and healthy.

At Pets are Pals, we follow the Burgess Excel Feeding Plan; a five- step feeding plan which provides essential fibre, nutrients, vitamins and minerals that small animals needs. This includes premium quality feeding hay, tasty nuggets, nature snacks, fresh greens and fresh water. Along with stocking many Burgess products, we can also give nutritional advice for your rabbit.

It is also important to give rabbits a weekly health check.

Look to see if their eyes are clean

and bright. Are their teeth okay and not too sharp or in need of cutting down? A balanced diet not only looks after their tummies, it also helps cut down their ever-growing teeth naturally.

Rabbits should be a healthy weight as being overweight can cause health issues as with any other pets.

if left untreated. At Pets are Pals, we sell fly guard which protects rabbits for up to three months.

OLD FLATTS FARM PET CREMATORIUM

Long haired breeds may also need regular grooming. In the warmer weather, all rabbits are susceptible to fly strike caused by maggots which can be dangerous

Regular cleaning of homes and hutches can also prevent fly strike which can form from faeces. Clean their bedding two to three times a week and protect hutches with fly sheets.

Rabbits also need regular exercise and stimulation with toys and snacks. Make sure hutches are tall enough for them to stand on their hind legs, with a run attached for them to hop about freely.
