Up hill and down dale

It’s all four one and one four all in South Yorkshire this May as the biggest, best attended and most dramatic race on the cycle calendar speeds into our area again with the Tour de Yorkshire 2018.

Now in its fourth year, the event promises to be bigger and better than previous years, adding an extra day to extend it to four stages across four days, each taking in a different region of the county over the May Day weekend. And this year, Barnsley is one of the eight towns chosen to host the race, with stage two starting outside the iconic town hall on Friday 4th May.

Since launching in 2015 as a legacy of the Grand Depart ‘14 in Leeds, the Tour de Yorkshire has gone on to become a success story in its own rights, creating an international flagship cycling event while showcasing some of God’s Own County’s beautiful scenery along the routes. Last year, there was a record of 2.2million spectators who lined the

streets, with a global audience watching in 180 countries. Its spin- off led to an amazing £64million being spent in the Yorkshire economy.

Organised by Welcome to

Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation, this year’s event covers the four corners of Yorkshire, taking in 169 villages, towns and cities.

As the riders mount their cycles and battle it out for the jerseys, the race kicks off in Beverley on Thursday 3rd May for its Arts and Culture stage. Starting in the historic market town, the route will pass by the coast at Hornsea before heading via the Wolds towards Doncaster along the Great Yorkshire Way.

But it’s the second day we’re most excited for as the competitors

get to take in the sights of South Yorkshire along the Heritage stage on Friday 4th May which highlights villages in our area known for their industrial and historical past. From Barnsley’s imposing town hall where events will be happening for families and spectators, the route heads out towards Penistone before weaving its way back through the borough past some of our best-known family attractions such as the Cooper Gallery, Worsbrough Mill and Elsecar Heritage Centre.

The second stage also sees the first mountain trial with the Cote de Blacker Hill, a steep incline on the way to Hoyland. On passing through Wentworth village, the route then crosses the border into Rotherham via Swinton and Kilnhurst before heading north to Conisbrough Castle and on to Otley and Ilkley where the second day ends on its first ever summit finish on the Cow and Calf.
