1998 box set dedicated to the Beach Boys‘ Pet Sounds reveals that he played upright bass on 10 tracks and ukulele on “Caroline No.”; Longtime Y&T guitarist Joey Alves died in March 2017 at the age of 63. He played on the band’s first eight studio albums, including the sizeable mid-’80s hits 'In Rock We Trust' and 'Down for the Count;' Robert “P-Nut” Johnson, whose vocal talents enlivened Bootsy Collins’ Rubber Band before becoming a key component of George Clinton‘s Parlia- ment-Funkadelic passed away in March of 2017; Austin-based singer-songwriter Jimmy LaFave died on May 22 after bat- tling cancer for a year. He was 61. LaFave was one of the 2017 inductees into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame; Jim Fuller, a co-found- ing member of the Surfaris whose lead guitar work is heard on the band's signature hit "Wipe Out," died in March of 2017 at the age of 69; Earl Cranston Clark, who wrote songs for George Strait, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, Tracy Lawrence and Tim McGraw, died on July 7, 2017, in Smyrna, Tenn. He was 70 years old; Blues harmonica legend James Cotton died in March of 2017 at the age of 81 after a battle with pneumonia; John Thomas “Sib” Hashian, the drum- mer who played on Boston‘s first two best- selling LPs, died in March of 2017 while performing on a cruise ship; Legendary steel guitarist Kayton Roberts, who played with Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Randy Travis and Alison Krauss, died on July 13 at the age of 83; Paul O'Neill founded the hard rock/classical crossover project Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who released six albums between 1996 and 2015, with Christmas Eve and Other Stories being their most successful. He died on April 5 from an undisclosed chronic illness; Coun- try music Songwriter Geoff Mack, best- known for writing "I've Been Everywhere," died on Friday, July 21, in Australia. He was 94 years old; David Peel was a mainstay of


the New York street music scene from the late '60s until his death on April 6. Many of his songs reflected his pro-marijuana agenda, and he was befriended by John Lennon, who mentioned him in "New York City" and pro- duced his 1972 album, The Pope Smokes

Dope; Singer-songwriter and guitarist Michael Johnson, a pop singer turned country hitmaker in the '80s, died on July 25 at home in Minneapolis, Minn., after what's been described as "a long illness." He was 72. His string of country hits included "I Know You by Heart," "Give Me Wings" and "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder;" John Geils served as the guitarist of the J. Geils Band, who combined rock and soul on a se- ries of beloved albums in the '70s and '80s. He died on April 11 at his home in Groton, Mass., at the age of 71; Keni Richards was the drummer for Autograph, the hard rock band best known for 1984's "Turn Up the Radio." He died on April 12 at the age of 60; During a 40-year career in groups and as a solo act, Allan Holdsworth was a legend of progressive rock and jazz fusion guitar. Eddie Van Halen regularly called him his favorite guitarist, and many of his peers were in awe of his talent. He died on April 15 at the age of 70 after suffering a heart attack; Bruce
