THE BUZZ

what I was in for. I had no idea that I would adjust more people on that trip than I would in my entire time at school. I had no idea the level of poverty I would see fi rsthand and how that would affect me. I had no idea how much my life would change for the better from experiencing it all and I had no idea that it would fully awaken within me a call to serve on a global level.

M It would be 8 years before I would have the opportunity to

serve again. On April 25, 2013, I departed on the trip of a lifetime to the Sacred Valley in Peru. I was excited, nervous, grateful and feeling part of something much bigger than myself. It is hard to truly describe what those 5 days of service were like. The love that I gave and the love that I received grounded me in my purpose of what I was put on this earth to do.

I will be taking my third service trip on March 25th and this one will be to the Dominican Republic. It will be especially meaning- ful because I will be reunited with Jeni Olsen. She and I served together in Peru. My connection with Jeni and the rest of the team on that trip was instant. We all started off as friends and by the end of the trip we were family. It was on that trip that Jeni was inspired and moved into service. That is what led her to Soles4Souls.

Jeni's fi rst service trip with Soles4Souls was in 2014. She took her son Max with her on that trip to Honduras when he was only in 8th grade. When he returned home to Napa and shared about his experience, his friends all wanted to go. The following year Jeni took 8 teens to Haiti and since then has taken groups on 3 more trips-to

y love of service began when I decided to become a chiropractor but it truly took hold on my fi rst service trip in June 2005. Still being a student, I really had no idea

Guatemala, back to Haiti and then Honduras. These service trips are life-changing, for anyone, but for teens who are vulnerable and impressionable, they can change the course of their lives in an inspiring and impactful way.

One of the goals with my last service trip to Peru was to create a sense of community around the experience. I wanted those that were inspired by the work being done there to feel like they were a part of it, no matter where they

were. Through a non-profi t, I was able to set up sponsorship op- portunities so my friends, family and patients could contribute to the cause. I shared the experiences of the day with them through writing and photos. Every single person that believed in me was there with me in spirit. Knowing I had their support meant so much. I would love to recreate that experience with this trip to the Dominican Re- public with Jeni and with the amazing teens that will be joining us.

Because of these trips, my eyes have been opened to the true

power of love. There is no greater gift than that. Every day I do my best to carry what I have learned from these experiences: to con- sciously make the choice every day to live from love, that every day is an opportunity to make a positive difference in someone’s life and that one person can indeed make a difference. Join me and together we can. Thank you.
