he start of a new year is a time for refl ection, goal setting, and making changes. Be sure to make New Ventures Maine part of your journey. New Ventures Maine creates empower-


ing environments for Maine people to defi ne and achieve their goals in starting and growing businesses, securing good jobs, managing money to build assets, and becoming leaders in their communities.


The organization itself is in a time of refl ection and goal setting. July 1, 2018 marks the beginning of New Ventures Maine’s 40th year.


“It has been an incredibly rewarding journey,” says executive director Gilda Nardone. “We have grown from starting as a Dis- placed Homemakers program with a $10,000 appropriation from the Legislature, to a $1.7 million annual budget offering services from centers and outreach sites throughout Maine.”


In 1994, the name changed to Maine Centers for Women,


Work, and Community; and in 2015, the organization rebranded to New Ventures Maine. For nearly 40 years, the organization has offered tuition-free workshops and individual coaching sessions to

• Totally Trades! Conference for Girls in six locations statewide. These events give 8th grade and high school girls the oppor- tunity to explore careers in the trades and technology such as heavy equipment operation, welding, information technology, construction, and engineering. The Southern Region confer- ence is March 22nd at Westbrook Regional Vocational Center. Contact your local high school guidance counselor for infor- mation on how to attend.


• CA$H Maine partnerships bring information and assistance to more than 5,000 tax fi lers, helping them qualify for and keep 100% of their refunds, and connecting them to resources to help them save for the future. CA$H Maine is a Volunteer In- come Tax Assistance (VITA) program that uses IRS-certifi ed tax preparers to help people fi le their taxes for free. • Matched savings programs for income-eligible individuals and families who want to save money to pay for unexpected emergency expenses.
