An opportunity to foster growth
Negotiating successful free trade agreements with countries such as the US and Canada will be key to the long term growth of the region’s economy, according to MEP Emma McClarkin. The MEP told business leaders that Britain has a unique opportunity to
cement its role in the world as a bastion of free trade which includes continuing to have a ‘deep and special relationship’ with Europe. Emma McClarkin was addressing some of the region’s most active
transatlantic businesses on the future of the transatlantic relationship and the potential trade agreements that may come into play post-Brexit at a breakfast networking event hosted by Browne Jacobson on behalf of British American Business Council (BABC) and Invest In Nottingham. Emma McClarkin said: “The decision to leave the EU does not mean that
the UK will turn its back on the European family of nations. Instead, the UK wants to build a new deep and special relationship as Europe’s strongest friend and partner. “Ensuring mutual growth and prosperity; providing stability; and
pursuing shared goals and interests. The UK was, is, and always will be a strong and reliable partner that is ready to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities that this globalised world offers. “Whilst we negotiate with the EU and prepare to reap the rewards of Brexit, the economy is proving to be resilient. We have more people in
work than ever before and the latest figures illustrate that the manufacturing sector is accelerating as output and orders pick up. “At the same time, growth is steady and unemployment is at its lowest
levels since the 1970s. Despite the doom saying predictions, the UK’s economy is strong and progressive and open to investment from our transatlantic allies. The UK and the US can push on with a fast, transparent and comprehensive trade deal. There is currently a huge bilateral commercial relationship between the UK and the US, with trade worth approximately $240bn per year. “A trade deal of this magnitude would support economic growth, job creation, and increased consumer choice on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Representing the city
Elizabeth Ajayi and Aklima Khatun with Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Anne Underwood
Two Birmingham students had the opportunity to represent the city on a global stage when they attended the Global Youth Ambassadors Leadership Summit in Chicago. Elizabeth Ajayi from St Paul’s Girls School in Edgbaston and Aklima
Khatun from the Broadway Academy in Perry Bar earned the chance to participate in the week-long conference, which is aimed to develop and support young female leaders of the future. The event was launched in 2016 by former First Lady Michelle Obama
and is attended by women aged 14 to 16 who live and go to school in one of Chicago’s global sister cities. Professor Jo Andrews, who is the Birmingham City Ambassador for the
summit, said: “Participation in the event is competitive and Birmingham was the only one of Chicago’s many sister cities to secure not one but two places at the all-expenses paid conference this year.” Heather Law, from Birmingham City Council’s European and International
Affairs team, said: “The European and International Affairs Team are delighted that Birmingham schools are benefitting from our partner sister city relationship with Chicago. This is the second year in a row that at least one Birmingham student has secured a place on the programme and we are hopeful that Birmingham will once again be represented next year.”
