Ready or not, the clock is winding down fast on 2017 and we’ll be ringing in the new year before you know it. We’ve already heard from many of you who are making plans for 2018 and we’re looking forward to serving you again in the coming year. But before we turn the page in our calendars, let’s take a look back at a couple of the major accomplishments of 2017. In our WRE Update this month, we report on the official opening of the Queensferry Crossing. As we wrote in our September/ October 2016 issue, this was the largest infrastructure project in
Scotland in a generation, and its opening was celebrated in a similarly grand manner. In our Cover Story, we review some of the major milestones along the road to completing one of the two spans of the replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge north of New York City. Known as the New NY Bridge, and now officially dubbed the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the completed westbound span is now handing all of the traffic once ferried over the Hudson river by the obsolete older structure. Built during a time of material shortages, the older structure was intended to last 50
years and serve no more than 100,000 cars per day. Groaning under the load of 50 million vehicle crossings last year, about forty percent beyond its design capacity, the first sections of the structure have already been removed and hauled away from the site. Te eastbound span will open in 2018 to fully complete the new facility. Te scale of this project is breathtaking, as are the photos of the work in progress. Tis year also brought its share of challenges, as our friends along the Gulf coast, in
parts of Florida and in Puerto Rico know all too well. We sought out Howard (JR) Bristow to get some perspective on one component of disaster recovery – insurance claims for equipment losses. After nearly 40 years in the business, he has a lot of perspective to share. We have had the pleasure of speaking with a good many of you at various conferences and trade shows this year, and many of you have very generously shared ideas for articles along with company and product news. And you’ve given us great feedback what you’ve read here. We are always fascinated to learn about your work and your company, so please don’t hesitate to share your news or story idea and we’ll be glad to write about your newest product or latest project. We wish you a joyous holiday season, and every success in the new year!
