Looking west toward Rockland county: work continues on the new eastbound span (center) while the westbound span (right) handles westbound traffic as final preparations are made to divert eastbound traffic from the Tappan Zee (left) to that span until the eastbound span is complete in 2018.

approached the height of the old roadway. Tis safety effort and mindset extended to training as
well. For example, the choreography of crews working on construction of the main towers was intricate enough that training for the process was performed in an offsite, full- size replica of a main tower base and jump-form assembly.
One Final Trip On August 26, of this year, less than four years after permanent work began at the site, westbound traffic was transitioned onto the future westbound span configured

in a four-lane arrangement leaving half of that span available for further work. A little over one month later, on October 6, eastbound traffic was shifted to the other half of that same span. Late that evening, a Nyack resident made the final trip on the Tappan Zee, in a 1929 Model A Ford Phaeton. With the old span out of service, this November, the I Lift NY super crane returned to service to begin dismantling the structure. Tat work began with removal of a large section of steel near the Westchester shore, and the crane will lift twenty similar sections weighing up to 1,300 tons in the coming months. It will also remove large sections of substructure and concrete. Te Truway Authority plans to recycle much of this material, providing well over 100 deck panels to be used for bridges and roads elsewhere in the state. As the disused structure is removed, final work can proceed on the eastbound span. And one last remarkable number: In a testament to
proper planning, the project is reported to be on budget and on target for completion in 2018. y
