Sports and leisure operator, Everyone Active is celebrating a prestigious industry reward after being named Facility Operator of the Year at the Swim England National Awards in November. This is the seventh year the operator of 97 swimming pools has scooped the accolade. Working with local authorities, Everyone Active, have seen more than seven million casual swimmers through its door and a further 180,000 students per week taking part in their Learn to Swim programmes each week. The award also acknowledged the operator’s efforts in Sports England’s ‘This Girl Can..’ campaign and speaking after the event in Birmingham, Group Swim Manager Jacqui

Tillman said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award for the seventh year. “It reflects our commitment to developing exciting, comprehensive programmes of water- based activity and ensures communities have access to the best possible facilities.” As well as retaining their Facility Operator title, Everyone Active member Lois May Rodgers received the Learn to Swim Award, and Ashley Varjav earned the runner-up award for the Teacher of the Year. Hayley Adams was posthumously given the Special Recognition Award following the sad news of her death earlier this year.

Chemical Leak Evaluation

Leisure seekers in Scotland were forced away from Eastwood Park Leisure Centre last month as fears of a chemical leak surfaced. The East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure spokesperson said: “A water leak from a burst pipe appears to have triggered and caused a fault to a chlorine alarm at Eastwood Park Leisure Centre. As soon as this occurred our standard procedures were immediately followed, and emergency services were notified.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue Services carried out appropriate testing and monitoring following the alert on November 15th and confirmed that no chlorine leak had been detected.

“Over the course of the day, the cause of the water leak has been investigated in conjunction with Scottish Water,” the statement continued. “We are unable to open the swimming pool, health suite and gym as the mains water supply to the Centre remains

off and it is not possible for the gym and swimming pool to operate during this time. “However, back-up water tanks are in place to ensure that toilet facilities are available for customers attending the shows at the theatre and events in Carmichael Hall.” The centre remained closed as essential repairs were made to the burst pipe as well as repairing the chlorine alarm but reopened to the public five days later.

A new temporary swimming pool has opened in a car park in Andover. The pool was due to open in late August, but back-to-back delays pushed the £700,000 project back. The pop-up pool is meant to bridge the gap in the town’s swimming facilities while a new leisure centre is built.

POSH POOL

Calls for an Olympic-sized swimming pool in Peterborough have been made as the city looks to update its sports strategy. City councillors have urged the authority to consider investing in a 50m pool to coincide with the new University of Peterborough, which is scheduled to open in 2022 and would increase sports participation and bring investment into the city.

The old pound coins officially lost their status as legal tender on October 15th but Michael Bury, 42, says staff at The Hydro, Harrogate, were completely inflexible and threated to phone the police.

LONDON LIDO DELAY Hackney Council has confirmed that London

Fields Lido will remain closed until contractors have finished the refurbishment to an acceptable standard. While the pool may appear to be ready for swimming, the entire facility needs to be completely safe following the identification of a series of defects.
