Business News Mr McDonald’s adds to franchise By John Lamb

Douglas Wright has established one of the largest McDonald’s franchise networks in Europe with the £2.2m acquisition of two restaurants in Walsall. He has completed the purchase

of franchises at Rushall and Reedswood to bring his total number of restaurants to 17. The 217 staff he has taken on at the two establishments brings his total number of employees to 1,500 across the Birmingham region. The Chamber patron has built up

his empire of Douglas Wright T/A McDonald’s since joining McDonald’s as a 16-year-old part-time cleaner on 93p an hour in July, 1981. In 1985, by the age of 20,

Douglas was appointed McDonald's youngest UK restaurant manager at the Oxford restaurant. But his life fell apart when a year

into his appointment he was involved in a serious car accident in which he broke his neck and was paralysed for over three months. But Douglas defied medical experts and recovered to walk again in 1986. He rose through the acquisition and construction teams and was

granted the highest individual honour of The President's Award, given annually to their best 10 UK employees chosen from a pool of some 75,000 people at the time. He gained several more company

accolades over the next four years. In 2002 Doug was granted a

McDonald's franchise in the centre of Lichfield and he quickly learned the skills of running his own business. Four years later he purchased a

second restaurant at Bassetts Pole and has expanded every year since 2010. He now owns 17 restaurants in Lichfield, Sutton Coldfield, West Bromwich, Walsall, Solihull, Oldbury, Birmingham, Rugeley and Burntwood. Said Douglas: “I am immensely

proud to have established this network of McDonald’s franchises and to be providing employment for so many people in the Birmingham area. “The two Walsall outlets mean

that we have a comprehensive ownership of the market in that area and we are actively looking for new opportunities over the whole region. “I have structured a company

that is lean, efficient and truly customer centric. I now employ

more than 1,500 people and have created over 200 management positions in the past 15 years. “Our staff and management

turnover is around 15 per cent lower than the industry average, which I attribute to the benefits packages we offer.” Douglas is also largely

responsible for Ronald McDonald House at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He is chairman of Ronald McDonald House Charities’ Board of Governors that provides a vital life-saving facility for youngsters from new-born babies to teenagers. The House, for which there is no

direct NHS funding, provides free accommodation to 66 families with children under treatment at the nearby Birmingham Children’s Hospital, enabling them to stay together close to the hospital and maintain a degree of normal family life. There is a constant

need for funds to cover annual running costs and the annual income target is £713,000.
