Reaching the summit: Paul Kehoe and Paul Faulkner

Brexit: ‘strain every sinew’, says BCC
British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) boss Adam Marshall has renewed calls for UK and European politicians to put ‘brinkmanship’ to one side and get a Brexit deal sorted out, for the sake of businesses all over the world. Dr Marshall was speaking in Birmingham at a
BCC international trade summit hosted at the Vox in Resorts World. He said: “I urge both the UK Government and
the EU27 to strain every sinew to move ahead - and put trade and transition at the heart of negotiations by the end of 2017. “European businesses need clarity. British
businesses need clarity. Third country businesses need clarity - with American, Japanese, Australian, Indian and Canadian firms pressing for this. “Further delays to trade and transition talks
would create a lose-lose scenario for everyone with a stake in the game.”
Dr Marshall also had harsh words for the UK’s
political class, who he accused of turning ‘lock, stock and barrel’ against business in recent years. He said: “A great global trading nation. Our politicians have used and abused that phrase liberally since the EU referendum last year. “Yet they need to put in place the conditions,
and the environment, that will actually help make it happen. As the saying goes, ‘wishing doesn't make it so’.” In a discussion, chaired by GBCC chief
executive Paul Faulkner, a delegate said that selling an English product had huge advantages. Rahul Kale, director of international business
and sales at Typhoo Tea, said: “We were in Russia and we proposed writing on our packaging in their language. But we were dissuaded when we were told that local people in Russia would think the product was local and that it had more value by being overtly English.”
collaboration with 15 partner organisations, delivered to almost 400 delegates. Growth Through People 2018 will be split

• Growth Through Attracting & Retaining Talent (5-9 March)
• Growth Through Workplace Environment (12-16 March)
• Growth Through Unlocking Potential (19-23 March) Each week is set to feature two workshops,
a panel discussion and two fringe events, spread across the Greater Birmingham region.
