Birmingham hailed as beacon


Birmingham has been hailed as a beacon of culture and a city with a cool attitude – by one of America’s biggest newspapers. A travel feature in the Boston Globe describes


the city as “at once gritty and visionary”, highlighting its ongoing transformation from an often-ignored industrial ‘wasteland’ to a must- visit travel destination. The article reserves particular praise for Birmingham’s food and arts scene, as well as its “push to reinvent its architectural heritage”. Boston Globe journalist Bill Donahue describes


the iconic Library of Birmingham as “an architectural marvel” and waxes lyrical about Birmingham City University’s new state-of-the- art Conservatoire. Donahue writes: “Birmingham has been


repeatedly called a ‘concrete jungle’ and an ‘industrial wasteland’. For snobbish Londoners, Birmingham, 120 miles northwest of the capital city, has always been a place to sidestep. But the tide is turning, and travel magazines are heretically prescribing Birmingham over London.
