Tackling outdoor timbers in time for winter
The key to tackling outdoor timbers in preparation for winter is to first and foremost keep the wood protected – using a high quality product is of paramount importance for this kind of project. A highly regarded product will ensure reliability and provide longevity when it comes to protecting outdoor wood when the weather takes a turn for the worse. Ronseal has the first full UK woodcare range to achieve an
accreditation from the British Board of Agrément (BBA), for providing decorators and tradesmen with high-quality products that are safe and reliable. The reputable woodcare brand has launched its bespoke trade range
following research with tradesmen that identified an increased demand for Ronseal’s well respected woodcare products in the trade segment. The new trade range includes the Ronseal 5 Year Woodstain,
Fencing Stain and Decking Protector products. All of which have passed the assessments, tests and accreditation procedures administered by the BBA and are ideal for tackling outdoor timbers in time for the winter months.
Which products are used will depend on the type of timber. Different
areas of outdoor wood are more prone to certain types of wear. Decking, for example, is often pressure treated with water proofers, meaning it can be very difficult to get products to adhere to it effectively. The process of cutting grooves into the timber also makes the wood denser at the surface. In addition, high amounts of weathering throughout the year,
combined with the foot traffic from frequent use, means decking timber needs to have a strong and durable protective layer. Products like Ronseal Decking Protector will waterproof decking to stop it splitting and swelling while also protecting against the weather to prevent greying.
For other outdoor woods, the product used needs to be flexible and
easy to apply. As the wood gets wet and temperatures change in the winter months the wood expands and contracts. A more flexible coating – and one that dries quickly – will move with the wood and won’t crack or peel as the weather worsens. Ronseal’s 5 Year Wood Stain, for example, dries in one hour without
any basecoats or primers and guarantees five years of protection, while the Fencing Stain offers increased wax for superior water repellence and UV defence for sheds and fences. To ensure the best results when tackling outdoor timbers, it’s not
only the quality of the product that ought to be consider but also the preparation that needs to take place before application. Sanding and wiping down the wood with a white spirit is a simple task but is absolutely paramount for eliminating any existing dirt or oils that may be on the timber – allowing tradespeople to maximise on the benefits of the quality products they’ve invested in.
