Community spirit in action

WHEN PDA MEMBER Ian Frost spotted an appeal on the PDA Facebook page he reacted immediately to respond to the request. An appeal had been launched by Jules

Griffiths to help her friend Hayley Lloyd and her son Tommy. Tommy has Muscular Dystrophy and had recently been given a grant to have a lift installed in their house. Jules had launched an appeal to get help with decorating and making good after the installation. Ian, Regional President for the Midlands and

South West Region, contacted Jules and they took charge to go through a plan of action in transforming the house. Ian went through specifications with her to make sure she could get the right materials and plan a start date.

y The tight schedule meant lots of work being carried out simultaneously and in close proximity long into the night – Good job the guys get along so well!

y Ian (centre) told The Decorator, “I’ve helped out with other SOS projects and I think it’s great to be able to use my skills to help a good cause.”

Work was still being undertaken on plastering

and a kitchen and bathroom were being installed. Ian took charge of the decorating aspect in the house and decided that the best place to start was the bedrooms so they had a haven for each of them to shut themselves away from the rest for the work. Then the rest of the house could be decorated afterwards. Ian had called fellow decorators Andy Pollard

and Adam Kemp to see if they could come and help him with the project and they both stepped up to the task.

Work got underway with the professional

decorators prepping and painting, they also instructed some non professional volunteers who had come to lend a hand, including neighbours and even the local postman! Pulling out all the stops, Ian and Andy worked

overnight until dawn to get the job finished. Unfortunately, they were delayed at the eleventh hour, literally watching paint dry, when they realised the gloss paint provided was oil based and not the quicker drying water based! When the project was finished a big reveal

stunned mother and son, who were delighted and overwhelmed with the transformation.

PDA decorator responds to SOS

WHEN HIS WIFE spotted an appeal on Facebook, PDA Member Sean Cannell of Brushmasters, based in Walsall, signed up straight away. TV show DIY SOS was helping a family devastated by the tragic death of a mum from cancer, who were living in the tiny house of the grandmother and the project involved extending the living space to house the grandchildren. When the big build finished at the end of July, Sean told The Decorator, “It really was the best

thing I've ever done, every trade pulled together to strip the whole house of plasterboard, walls and staircase, until it was just a shell. Then the decorating started on 22 July and carried right through until the reveal five days later.” Prior to the work, Sean featured in the local paper The Express and Star. Readers will have to

look out for the the TV programme in the future, it’s due to be aired in the next 6-12 months and nothing about the work done can be published before it's broadcast.
