The Future Management of the PDA
IN 2002, THE Painting & Decorating Association was formed by the merger of the British Decorators Association (est. 1894) and the Painting & Decorating Federation (est. 1946). The management of these organisations was
historically vested in an elected President and Council and echoed the ceremonial procedures of its Victorian ancestry. Indeed, the PDA has inherited a collection of Presidents’ chains and formal jewellery to rival many town and city mayors! In recent years this system of governance has
become increasingly unpopular, with the result that fewer members are willing to participate at a local, regional and hence national
level.
Recognising this, the National Council undertook a strategic review of the Association including external consultation. A ‘Future Strategy’ committee was formed which
has met regularly and has reported its finding and recommendations to the National Council. The Council’s final recommendations are to be
considered for approval by the Annual General Meeting in November 2017 and consequently the office of President and the National Council and
Executive Committee will become redundant when the President’s year of office ends at the AGM in November 2018.
Proposal for New Structure It is proposed that the management of the PDA will be vested in a Management Board, made up as follows:
• The Chief Executive (non-voting) • The Treasurer (elected annually)
• Three subscribing Members from Membership categories 1 & 2 elected for three years
• Three subscribing Members from Membership categories 3 & 4 elected for three years
• Three subscribing Members from Membership categories 5 & 6 elected for three years
One Member from each group will retire each
year but is eligible for re-election at the AGM. A Chair and Vice Chair will be elected by the Management Board from the nine tri-annually
elected Members at its first meeting (December 2018) following the AGM. The Management Board will usually meet four
times a year at the PDA offices in Nuneaton. It is proposed that: • Eight elected Members will be paid £150 per meeting plus travel expenses.
• The Chair will be paid £250 per meeting plus travel expenses.
• The Treasurer will be paid an honorarium of £1500 per annum plus travel expenses.
• The total cost is expected to be similar to the present cost of the President, Council and Executive.
The Annual General Meeting will continue to be
held in the autumn of each year. Each member of the committee whether
representing the smallest or the largest firm has an equal say and an equal vote! Always remember, the PDA is YOUR Association,
owned and managed by its Members. Please help us to care for it for the benefit of all our Members and our Trade.
