he artistic process started with a bronze figure made from a partial wax which was created with a rubber mold, and then scanned. The artist


used the scan to complete the interior walls. They then modified the original digital file to remove some parts of the figure and open up the closed areas. The interior structure was then added in pieces that intersected the walls of the figure. Then, with only a 3D digital file to work with, a physical original had to be made. The figure was cast in one piece as the overall dimension easily fit into


Artcast’s production capability. “The interior wall was challenging, as the shell would be difficult to remove without caustic baths and the size of the piece made it difficult to work with strictly investment,” explained Erich Knoespel of Artcast, Inc. “We found a solution when we decided to build a solid mold only for the figure and then encase the solid mold and the gating with ceramic shell.” The finish required a light grinding of the exterior to remove the layer build lines left over from the binder jetting process. Final finishing and a clear wax was applied last.

Casting Conversion Improves Design, Reduces Cost “O


ur customer came to us for help with creating a better part, by making a casting from a part that was originally designed


as a fabricated part using machined components welded together. After reviewing their part, we suggested changes to the design not only to make a better product but also to create the casting for much less,” Paul Leonard, engineer at Aristo-Cast, Inc. stated. The part is a pressure measurement device used to measure fluid


flow velocity and is very important to aircraft flight, measuring the air speed. The difficulty with this component are its most important features, the casting’s internal dams. Each of the 4 dams are turned 90º from the one in front of the other and located in an 0.286” diameter tube, allowing air to enter and while keeping moisture out for accurate wind speed measurements. X-ray verification was used to verify all 4 dams were completely filled.
