Complex Investment Casting Provides a Solution When ‘Failure is Not an Option’

“O

ur customer came to us with a completed design for a high temperature die pressure oil pump for a

super car. They said part failure was not an option because replacing the part would be extremely difficult due to the location of the component... you would basically have to break the car in half to get to it,” Paul Leonard of Aristo- Cast, Inc. explained. The complexity of the core for the twisting passages, tough shell removal and varying wall thickness made this part difficult to cast. This was a great example of the benefits of investment

casting when solidification is a concern. “It was a great moment for us to deliver a casting to our

customer’s machine source. They never thought it would be possible to meet the customer’s requirement for high pressure leak testing with a casting,” Leonard concluded.

PART: Oil Pump Size: 8 x 10 x 8” Alloy: A356 Aluminum Notes: Complex investment casting solves difficult customer specifications.

Rear Frame Wins Defense Casting Award T

his optical system provides heat sink, card guide and mechanical support for an electro-optical FLIR system,

used in drones like the Predator and Global Hawk. “It was designed as a casting from the beginning. Originally, there was a card guide casting and some kind of an assembly,” Henri Fine of Uni-Cast described. This casting integrates many functions for electronics and mechanical purpose in one compact design. The complexity and lightness of the casting makes it unique and highlights the benefits of investment casting.

PART: Rear Frame Size: 27 x 18 x 9” Alloy: F357 Notes: Casting eliminated the need for fabrication resulting in lower cost, lighter weight and enhanced product life.
