“MakeHollow Process” and 3D Printed Wax Pattern Combine Forces to Win ICI Fine Art Award

I

n an effort to expose artists to the new technologies that Artcast is capable of, the foundry created a batguy figure from a 3D Printed PMMA pattern. The process began by removing the base from the figure.

“This allowed us to make the base hollow even though the figure is solid,” Erich Knoespel of Artcast, Inc. stated. “The base went through our own “MakeHollow Process”. The original base is encased in a half-final thickness of the shell, the original is then burned out, we cut the shell open, build a wax on the inside of that shell, gate the new wax and clean any residual modeling wax off the outside of the shell. Then a full shell is built on the gated make-hollow wax.” The figure and the base are then welded together. Once

the seams match, the surface is prepared for patina. The tech- nique of soaking, spraying and brushing/stippling the chemi- cals on the surface is what gives the piece its unique and rich patina.

PART: Generic Bat Figure Size: 12” tall

Alloy: C87300 Everdur Notes: Foundry’s specialized investment casting process and 3D printed wax pattern combine forces.
