Complex Design Ideal for Lightweight Investment Casting T
his complex casting houses the optics for a new high resolution targeting system for an aerospace application. “Our customer required a lightweight, complex design in
order to achieve performance requirements. Based on their specifications, there were limited options for manufacturing this design. Cera-Met offered engineering support on design modifications to reduce tooling costs and improve cycle times,” commented David Bertram, Sales Manager. In order to save time in production, the first phase of
production was manufactured with SLA patterns while tooling was under construction. The tooling has since been qualified and released for production.

Autodesk, to remove as much material as possible in the component and not affect the strength requirements needed for this casting. Previously machined from solid and welded, the new
design was finalized and once the casting was created, estimated cost savings for fuel was considerable, maintaining flight costs for consumers for years to come.
