MAYOR’S COCKTAIL PARTY

Sevenoak’s Mayor, Councillor Maxine Chakowa, held her fundraising cocktail party at Knole House in aid of Breast Cancer Care – and raised the amazing amount of £7,000. Sevenoaks Town Council are grateful to Knole who once a year enable the current mayor to hold the fundraising cocktail party. The event was sponsored by Santander, who matched pound for pound the funds raised in the raffle and silent auction. Councillor Chakowa is grateful to all of the following who enabled this amount of money to be raised on the evening: Grierson Gallery, Knole, Santander, Sevenoaks Army Cadets, Sevenoaks Town Council staff, The Stag Theatre, Steph Harrison, Those Magic Beans and Tonbridge Old Fire Station.

EMBARQUEMENT AT TONBRIDGE CASTLE

Former Tonbridge & Malling MP Sir John Stanley presented a hand-woven replica section of the Bayeux Tapestry entitled “Embarquement” to Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council at Tonbridge Castle.

Sir John was accompanied by his wife, Lady Elizabeth, for the presentation ceremony of Embarquement, which shows horsemen and foot soldiers embarking on a ship bound for the invasion of England by William the Conqueror in 1066. The Mayor of Tonbridge & Malling, Councillor Roger Dalton, MP for Tonbridge & Malling Tom Tugendhat,

Leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Councillor Nicolas Heslop, Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Maria Heslop, Chief Executive of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Julie Beilby, local borough and county councillors and representatives from Tonbridge Civic Society and Tonbridge Historical Society were all also among the guests.

The event also had an important educational dimension – 12 Year Six students from The Slade School in Tonbridge attended the presentation with their teachers, as part of a school history project.

Sir John told the guests: “Without the Council’s vision and determination, Tonbridge Castle would have remained just a ruin as it was when I first became Tonbridge & Malling’s MP in 1974. The castle is now one of the great historic castles in Britain for children and adults to visit. I hope that ‘Embarquement’ will add to their interest and enjoyment for many years to come.”
