Show your breasts you care
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the exclusive Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic clinic Purity Bridge, and Cripps, the top Tunbridge Wells law fi rm, are joining hands this month to co-host a women-only event on breast awareness
T
he Big Pink Know Your Breasts event, in aid of Breast Cancer Care UK, is planned to educate, inform and raise awareness about
breast health. The event is taking place on Wednesday 18th October at 7pm at Cripps, 22 Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, and is open to all (female) members of the public. This is the fi fth year that the Purity Bridge team have hosted their Breast Awareness event, and they are delighted to be joined this year by Cripps. Cripps Senior Partner Clare Hyland commented: “We are delighted to be supporting this event with Purity Bridge to raise awareness of such an important issue affecting so many people of all ages.” Those attending will hear informative and important talks covering how to examine your breasts, what to do in the event you fi nd a lump, the process from there and options for breast reconstruction. As with every year, the highlights of the
event are the volunteers who are present – giving live demonstration showing how to examine your breasts, and also to hear directly from a breast cancer survivor who has undergone reconstruction. The experts sharing their knowledge
are Consultant Plastic Surgeons, Marc Pacifi co and Nora Nugent, and Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, Haresh Devalia. Mr Pacifi co, Lead Consultant Plastic Surgeon, said: “I am proud that we are holding the annual Purity Bridge breast awareness
event this year in collaboration with Cripps. It will allow us to further raise awareness of the importance of breast health this year. “This will be our fi fth ladies-only event – one held each year since we opened Purity Bridge. The event is increasingly popular, and rightly so, due to the support of those who attend, and the commitment from the Purity Bridge team and my consultant colleagues.” He added a “special mention and thank you” should go to our brave cancer survivor who will share her experience with us, as well as our volunteer Ruth, who will reveal all to allow for a full demonstration on how to examine your breasts properly. “Breast awareness is so important, I would encourage as many to attend as possible,” he said. Fiona West, Fundraising Offi cer at Breast
Cancer Care, added: “We are so grateful to Purity Bridge and Cripps for holding a Big Pink event in aid of Breast Cancer Care. We rely on supporters like them to ensure we can continue to provide our vital information and emotional support network for free. We help thousands of people fi nd a way to live with, through and beyond breast cancer. With one in eight women developing breast cancer in their lifetime, there has never been such an urgent need for our support services.”
THE PURITY BRIDGE GUIDE TO CHECKING YOUR BREASTS:
Once a month – 2 minutes, 3 steps
STEP 1 LOOK • Stand in front of the mirror. • Look for unusual lumps or bumps. • Look to see if a nipple is newly inverted. • Slowly raise your arms above your head – look out for any skin dimpling or tethering, also look for any fl uid coming out of the nipple.
STEP 2 FEEL • Lie down on your bed. Imagine the breast as a circle divided up into 4 quarters.
• Press and feel each breast quarter with the palm and fi ngertips of the opposite hand (so right hand for left breast, left hand for right breast) in gentle circular motions to see if there are any lumps.
• Now check around the nipple in the same way.
STEP 3 MOVE • Stand up and feel your breast again. Also feel your breasts with your arms above your head.
If you have any concerns about your breasts, contact your GP straightaway. They will be able to refer you to a specialist as required.
