The Vine in Sevenoaks has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world. It is among a record- breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that has received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. The Chairman of the Open Spaces and

Leisure Committee said: “Sevenoaks Town Council is absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the fi rst time. We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrated the dedication that goes into maintaining The Vine to such a high standard.”

CHARITY OF THE MONTH Friends of Shelby Newstead

In March 1996 Shelby, the nine-month-old daughter of David and Sally Newstead, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a particularly virulent form of cancer. At the time, the prognosis was not good, so small and frail was the little child. However, on 27th March 1996, the surgeons at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital succeeded in removing a large tumour from Shelby’s chest. Thanks to the outstanding skills of the surgeons and the professional care she received, Shelby went on to make a full recovery and is now a

young woman in excellent health. Impressed with the level

of care Shelby experienced, her

parents and a few close family friends decided to hold a fundraising exercise. The event in November 1996 raised £6,500. It was decided to continue fundraising and the Friends of Shelby Newstead (FoSN) charity was born. Its mission was, and is, to raise as much money as possible to help seriously ill and, sometimes, terminally ill children. The committee, most of whom live in West Kent, are all volunteers and every penny raised goes to children’s good causes. In the intervening 20-plus years FoSN has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds and has distributed it in the forms of cash donations, medical equipment, wheelchairs, special beds, family transport, holiday breaks, contributions to respite housing refurbishments and much more – all to deserving children and their parents or carers.

Funds are raised by traditional means such as raffl es, fetes, golf days, fun runs and, distinctly, an annual Shelby ‘Doo’ – a glittering themed-ball with fabulous entertainment and seriously-high quality auctions.

The 2017 Shelby ‘Doo’ takes place on 18th November at the Maidstone Exhibition Centre, Detling Showground when the theme this year will be From Russia With Love. To buy tickets for the ‘Doo’ email tim@shelbynewstead.co.uk • For more information on FoSN, visit www.shelbynewstead.co.uk
