tranSform LIvES a 25-year-old from newtownabbey has developed an app that will enable people who can’t speak to contact the emergency services. becca hume developed the app after identifying a gap in the market.
‘the idea had come to me when I was working in marks & Spencer as a student,’ becca told Pif. ‘I had a colleague who was deaf and I wanted to be able to communicate with them, so I learnt sign language. after that, while I was studying product design at the University of Ulster, I had been thinking of a non-verbal method of contacting 999, and that was when the idea of the Just tap app came to me.’
the app allows people to enter their medical information into their mobile device so that it is passed on to the emergency services when required. a user profile is created and the patient’s medical history is stored. Within 30 seconds of activation, the emergency services are informed and, by using gPS, they can pinpoint the location of the person who requires help. for more information visit

farewell to his team – some of whom have
been with him for years!
fond farEWELL for PharmacY StaLWart
a surprise tea party was held at the East belfast network centre in belfast’s templemore avenue recently to mark the retirement of community pharmacist, gordon Pollock, who spent more than 30 years serving patients in his albertbridge road pharmacy.
more than 50 customers came to help gordon celebrate and there was no doubting the esteem in which he is held by his local community.
michael briggs from East belfast community development agency – a friend of gordon’s for more than 30 years – was on hand to pay tribute to his friend, while members of gordon’s team and his family also joined him in looking back on a career spent in the heart of his community.
‘the party was a lovely surprise,’ gordon told Pif. ‘I had actually sold the pharmacy a year ago to gordons chemist, but I stayed on in a part- time role to ensure the smooth transition for the staff. now it’s time for me to step back and pursue other activities.
‘What particularly pleased me about today was the fact that there were so many generations of families present here today – which makes me realise how much time I’ve actually spent in the business,’ he laughs. ‘It was totally overwhelming and very emotional, but was a day that I’ll always remember. I was especially delighted by the fact that michael spoke about me. I’ve known him all of my days, so that was particularly moving.’

Gordon thanks longtime friend, Michael Briggs, for his glowing tribute.
