COLLABORATION Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, Dr

Mark Timoney, listens intently to the varied and interesting presentations on the evening.

InSPIrIng changE t

he PPrb is a working group of pharmacy professionals chaired by Pharmacy forum nI and

works in collaboration with pharmacy colleagues in community Pharmacy northern Ireland (cPnI), national Pharmacy association (nPa), Pharmacists’ defence association (Pda) and Ulster chemists’ association (Uca).

the event ‘Inspiring change’ was designed to reflect what is a period of significant change for pharmacy in northern Ireland in an uncertain political and socio- economic environment.

a number of the issues facing the profession were highlighted at the event, including rebalancing, outcomes-based premises standards, professional standards for reporting, quality assurance and clinical governance.

Individual presentations were designed to challenge delegates to consider their own working practices and to explore potential areas for improvement in the delivery of quality services, through innovation and positive change.

Sheelin mcKeagney, community pharmacist and chair of the Pharmacy forum opened the proceedings with an overview of the current situation in nI community pharmacy. Sheelin highlighted the fact that a significant amount of progress has been made since pre- negotiations began last october to develop a number of new community pharmacy-based services.

glyn Walduck, head of claims from nPa Insurance Ltd talked about medication safety and provided an nPa case study, while dr brenda bradley, Pharmacy Lead at the health

& Social care board, talked about the work that’s currently being done in nI with regard to reducing the risk of dispensing incidents.

community pharmacists, Eoghan o’brien and michael cooper, meanwhile, presented on ‘demonstrating Innovation’ and both presentations were particularly well received.

Eoghan’s presentation looked at how bannside Pharmacy had undergone a recent refurbishment (see page 22 for more on this refit) in order to integrate new services, improve the dispensing process and maximise space and efficiency for patients.

michael, meanwhile, focussed on how the changing health landscape had led to his introducing robotics to the pharmacy, and how he uses data analytics to identify patients who would benefit from services. ‘change,’ he concluded, quoting from cheryl James, ‘is not an event. It’s a process.’

the feedback from the event has been enormously positive and the PPrb hopes that, going forward, this will be the first event of many to be organised.

Inspiring Change speakers: Kerry Grimes, (Clinical Governance & Service Support Pharmacist, CPNI); Eoghan O’Brien, (Community Pharmacist); Michael Cooper, (Community Pharmacist); Glyn Walduck, (Head of Claims, National Pharmacy Association); Dr Brenda Bradley, (Pharmacy Lead - Medicines Management & Governance HSCB); Sheelin McKeagney (Chair, Pharmacy Forum NI); Dorothy McKee, (Dorothy McKee Consulting) and Will Young (HSC Leadership Centre).

potential benefits of collaborative working within the profession to enhance learning opportunities and knowledge exchange. It also brought colleagues together to explore innovative approaches to enhancing service provision and improving patient safety. the event further demonstrates the on-going commitment of pharmacists across nI, to driving change and continuing to strive for the highest professional standards.

‘In celebrating the success of this event, we continue to be responsive to feedback from our members and colleagues and will seek to explore future potential opportunities for collaborative working.’ •

adELE graham, o’nEILLS PharmacY, coaLISLand ‘the event really was extremely worthwhile. It was great that such a wide range of topics were covered and clearly showed what nI community pharmacy is capable of contributing to healthcare.’

JoannE mcmULLan, mEdIcaL haLL, PortafErrY ‘going forward, it is vitally important that all healthcare professionals in nI work collaboratively. this event was a great example of collaborative working between diverging strands of pharmacy in the province. It certainly gave us all much food for thought.’
