Killough Pharmacy Killough

Focus on retail

The Careway team

Regional Business Manager, Tracy Elmes, is already seeing the fruits of her labours as she travels around Northern Ireland community pharmacies, helping them to use the model to the benefit of their businesses. During her thirteen years at AAH, Tracy has held various positions, primarily working with independents and small groups, but Careway has given her a new zest for her role!

‘Although the Careway programme is still in its infancy, the feedback we’ve already had has been amazing. Pharmacists are telling me that Careway has given renewed vigour to their business. Everything – from the look of the premises, to the fresh enthusiasm of staff thanks to our training modules – has taken on a dynamic quality, and the patients and customers are benefitting as a result.

Killough Pharmacy, which recently joined the Careway ‘stable’, is already seeing the benefits that the brand can bring to community pharmacy. Pharmacy owner, Ian Groves, took on the entire Careway model and is already witnessing the advantages that the Careway model brings to every aspect of his business.

‘While I was initially attracted by the generics offering, however, I have been really taken by what Careway have brought to all aspects of my business. For a start, my retail offering has been given a complete makeover. The planograms have been worth their weight in gold and while we are not big into retail, the shop signage and new display has undoubtedly attracted new customers to the pharmacy. Today’s community pharmacy – particularly those of us in rural areas – have to be able to provide all things to all people and while we now offer a small range of products across the board, there’s no doubt that merchandising under a strong brand like Careway has been of great benefit to us.

‘Since the refit, we’re not actually stocking more lines but our retail offering is now more visible to our patients and customers as they can see what is available much more clearly.

‘Of course, we have to ensure that our workforce is also happy in the business environment and I’m delighted to say that our Careway rebranding has provided that for all concerned. The new working environment has ensured that we have a warmer,

more comfortable setting for our staff and patients with increased storage space. This has, overall, provided a more pleasant workplace for all concerned and our staff are definitely appreciating this. As we all know, happy staff can only be good for any business.

‘The staff are also very taken with the training modules that Careway have provided. The Pain Build in particular has been a real winner since it gives the staff an opportunity to get onto the shop floor and provide informed sales to patients.

‘The response from our patients has been

fabulous. There’s no doubt that the

rebranding has given

them confidence in our ability to act as a

healthcare centre rather than simply as a pharmacy’

‘I’m so glad that I decided to take on the whole Careway model. I firmly believe that you need to give anything that you do 100 per cent and, with Careway, my belief in the brand is already paying dividends. From the generics offering - which initially attracted me - to the training, the merchandising and the fabulous range of products such as Betterlife, the Careway model, which I already knew was a strong business model, is proving its worth.

‘The response from our patients has been fabulous. There’s no doubt that the rebranding has given them confidence in our ability to act as a healthcare centre rather than simply as a pharmacy. Our informed sales approach also sets us apart from supermarkets and takes us away from the perception that we are simply a ‘supply only’ business. There is so much more that we as a community pharmacy can offer and, with Careway’s strong support, we are able to strengthen our position in our local community.’

‘My colleague, Sarah Armstrong (below) is the Retail Health Executive. Sarah is doing a fantastic job on a day-to-day basis, calling in with the pharmacies, facilitating the training and implementing the planograms. She says that the enthusiasm for the programme in the pharmacies is almost palpable. It’s been a great start for Careway and a great year! I look forward to what is yet to come!’
