REFIT The pharmacy prior to the refit

The newly-extended complementary therapy section

they should, and also consider how to display our wide range of complementary and herbal products.’

Eoghan spent the last few years moving from the very concentrated thought process to the ‘theory into practice’ stage, working closely with darren atkinson from aspire Interior Solutions.

‘We talked through every element of the business,’ Eoghan continued. ‘When you’re considering a refit, you really do have to examine every aspect of your pharmacy – from the dispensing, to the services, to the retail offering, to the practicalities of the space you have and how it’s used.

‘We’d noticed, for example, that the dispensary had a ‘blind spot’ in terms of shelving which was positioned in the middle of the floor. this meant that we could ‘miss’ a patient without specifically moving around to see if there was anyone in that ‘blind spot’. We also wanted to improve the access for our patients with mobility problems to ensure that they could not only access the premises easily but could move around the pharmacy floor with ease. by introducing new features such as an easy access

button at wheelchair level at the front door, we’re not only improving the standard of the premises, but are responding to your patient and community needs, which, as we all know, are constantly in a state of flux.

‘We also wanted to improve the facilities for our staff members and so we introduced improved communication systems, such as volP in order to facilitate this.’

In february of this year, bannside’s refit was completed with no disturbance to the patients or to the dispensing.

‘despite the fact that it was a major transformation,’ Eoghan said, ‘I’m delighted – and very proud – to say that we continued to provide an undisturbed service to our community. other than a bit of our retail offering being removed from display and a reduced space in which to work, we managed very well.’

as a result of the refit, bannside Pharmacy’s dispensing area has now been extended, leading to a much more efficient dispensing service and greatly improved work

flow. the dispensary is fully visible to the patients and – more importantly – the patients are all fully visible to the pharmacists and pharmacy staff.

While the complementary therapy section has been expanded, other retail shelving has been removed, which has enabled Eoghan to not only display literature supporting many of the pharmacy products, but also to introduce seating in front of the complementary section, to enable patients to discuss products with pharmacy staff, or to read the available literature.

needless to say, Eoghan is delighted with the results of the refit. ‘When I was considering this refit, I was constantly reminded of the old adage about it often being the simplest of changes that can have the biggest impact and I would say that, while I wouldn’t class this refit as the ‘simplest of changes’, when you keep your drivers for change at the forefront of your mind and remember why you’re doing what you’re doing, it helps you to remain focussed. as thomas Edison once said, ‘there’s a way to do it better. find it.’ I’d like to think that, with this refit, we certainly have.’ •
