rEShaPIng StroKE SErvIcES

Every year here there are around 2700 hospital admissions and over 1000 deaths due to stroke, which can affect anyone at any age, anytime. It is also the largest cause of acquired severe adult disability in northern Ireland.

now, a major public conversation in relation to reshaping stroke services across northern Ireland has been launched.

death rates from stroke have declined by around 50 per cent over the past 20 years, and there has been significant investment and progress made in relation to a number of areas. however, independent reports

have highlighted that our services nonetheless fall below national standards and there is considerable scope for improvement.

over the next thirteen weeks, health and Social care organisations, in conjunction with stroke survivors, carers, charities and staff, will be holding a series of meetings, engagements and workshops, as part of a pre-consultation process, to listen to a wide range of views and to discuss and debate how best to enhance stroke care for patients in northern Ireland. for further information, visit www.hscboard.hscni.net/stroke

NPA IN FOCUS nPa ISSUES ‘LoUd and ProUd’ mEdIa

chaLLEngE to IndEPEndEntS the nPa is offering broadcast media training free of charge to nPa members, to help the sector move up from last year’s high water mark of positive media coverage. the association is aiming for a step change in media consciousness and confidence within the independent sector throughout the UK.

‘Pharmacists and their teams should not be so bashful about the wonderful support they give day in and day out,’ said nPa head of communications, Stephen fishwick. ‘of course, good Pr is not their prime motivation for great patient care, but there is no shame in talking about the merits of local pharmacies. In fact, it is a necessity to be loud and proud in order to be heard above the noise of everyday news, current affairs and trivia.

‘as a result of the Support Your Local Pharmacy campaign, the level of active public and media support for community pharmacy has never been higher. Yet, pharmacy is still too often not part of the local or national media conversation on key health care issues.

‘We are therefore offering this training to achieve a step change in media consciousness and confidence within the independent sector, so that pharmacy can take up more media opportunities at a local and national level. the nPa is active on tv, radio, press and social media, as are the other national pharmacy organisations. however, we need to grow media capacity at grass-roots, so that positive coverage can be generated constantly and media opportunities can be taken locally, as and when they arise.’

the training will take the form of: Webinar (open to all) mock radio interviews and follow up coaching (by phone) full day, studio based, face to face training regular media top tips

nPa members are invited to apply to take part in the programme at www.npa.co.uk/media-training. for more information, email independentsvoice@npa.co.uk, leaving telephone contact details.

the initial PPm will be prescription volume and is now available on request. the next PPm will be minor ailments performance and will be available in July 2017. to access the PPm service, please complete the simple online registration form, available on the nPa website or contact a.mcalister@npa.co.uk.
