a window of opportunity – for everyone! 20/06/2016

Each year, the Uca Pre-reg ‘Life after registration’ seminar and recruitment event offers students the opportunity to take their first steps as independent pharmacists. the event, which was held once again at the Wellington Park hotel in belfast, not only provides students with a wide range of information on issues such as interview skills, but also provides employers with access to the pharmacists of the future.

this year’s event was the usual mix of wide-ranging and informative presentations on subjects such as locuming and self employment, personal and business finance, tax tips and interview techniques and all attendees were united in their agreement that the event had not only been informative, but highly practical.

Shannon mcErlean, Sarah mcKenna and raymond cousins were particularly impressed by the advice that they’d been given with regard to attending interviews.

‘We all have interviews coming up,’ said Sarah, ‘and so the information was extremely helpful. from interview skills to simple things such as sitting up properly and not adopting a bad posture stance, all of the info will enable us all to not only know how to behave at an interview, but will give us more confidence in terms of knowing what to expect.’

‘over the next few months,’ said Shannon, ‘we’ll be going around different employers and so the fact that some potential employers are here, means that we will be able to have our questions answered and we can tailor our interview techniques to their specific needs.’

malaysian students, Yann (crystal) Ying chan and Erin Wong Ee See, were equally impressed by the seminar presentations.

‘I think what impressed me most,’ said crystal, ‘was that issues such as writing a good cv were covered and this clearly shows that the organisers fully understand the minutiae involved in taking your first steps out into the employment market. Up until this point, everything that we have written is to do with our subject and our examinations. now we need to learn to sell ourselves in the job market.’

‘I particularly enjoyed the presentation on locuming,’ said Erin. ‘I now know much more about locuming and the fact that there was a locum pharmacist presenting means that she really knew what she was talking about, and was able to offer tips that could help us in this market.’

the students aren’t the only ones to benefit from this annual event however.

‘Events such as this,’ said fraser Perman, regional manager at Well, ‘provide us with an opportunity to help people to understand what a career with Well entails and to show them the opportunities that are open to them.’

darren hill, regional recruiter for boots UK, agrees.

‘this seminar allows us to inform students and to show them what boots can offer in terms of the variances in pharmacy nationwide.’ michael Lennox from South West Pharmacy collaborative was certainly a man on a mission on the day.

‘What I would really love,’ he told Pif, ‘is to bring a cohort of like-minded pharmacists to come to the South West of England to live together and to work together for the duration of a three-year programme at the end of which they can work across primary care in a series of integrated roles.’

the final word goes, however, to martin mcLean and Joe morrison from event sponsors, bank of Ireland. ‘our sponsorship of and presence at this event,’ martin said, ‘is a twofold operation. on one side we want to provide the students with an insight into potentially buying a pharmacy – or buying into one – and we educate the pharmacists in the pharmacist/ bank working relationship. on the other hand, we also advise the students on the consumer side of our business – assisting them in the move from being a student to being a working pharmacist and show them the opportunities that are available to them in terms of mortgages and transport opportunities.’

needless to say, the Uca were delighted with the outcome of the event.

‘this was our tenth annual seminar for our newly-qualified pharmacists,’ said

Uca operations manager, adrienne clugston. ‘they are just emerging from an intense year leading up to their final exam and just didn’t have the headspace for this information.
