JULY/AUGUST 2017

Have modern-day slaves worked for you today?

Slavery isn’t dead. In fact, estimates suggest that at least 23 slaves have helped you get ready for work this morning, including seven to mine the minerals used in your phone, 11 to pick the cotton in your clothes and five to harvest the beans in your coffee. Modern slavery is when someone is forced to work

for little or no pay. You may be surprised to know that modern slavery has been found in many places of work including farms, factories, care homes, nail bars, transport, construction sites, fishing and hotels. Over the past year there have been numerous damaging headlines about unethical labour practices in warehouses in Derbyshire, modern slaves in textile factories in Leicestershire, and criminal convictions in Nottinghamshire. So how can your business avoid being in the headlines for all the wrong reasons? The UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 places a duty on all

UK companies to consider how they tackle modern slavery and human trafficking, and for larger companies to publish a statement explaining how they are doing this. To date, 31,000 companies have published statements, and the majority state that they expect their supply chains to be delivering on anti-slavery initiatives.

Are you aware of the steps you need to take to

ensure you have addressed your responsibility under the Modern Slavery Act? Will you be able to provide evidence to meet the stringent supplier codes of conduct? Would your business survive the negative reputation and loss of business if you did nothing? These are difficult questions to answer – but we can

help. Hear from industry expert Sonia Sehgal on 21 September at our Protecting Your Business from Unethical Practices course, running at our offices in Nottingham, for support and guidance on how to implement the necessary changes.

TRAINING COURSE IN FOCUS: OFFICE 365

With many businesses considering switching to Office 365 or GSuite (formerly Google Apps for Business) there is a lot of uncertainty as to what exactly these are, how they can be used within businesses and what they have to offer. Many businesses may also have

already made the switch to Office 365 or GSuite and may not be utilising their full potential. The Chamber runs a one-day

course for either Microsoft 365 or Google GSuite - demonstrating what these cloud services are - on the customer’s premises or as an open course.

If you are interested in running a bespoke programme, please contact Vicki Thompson on 0333 320 0333 ext 2153, email vicki.thompson@emc-dnl.co.uk or book a place on our open course, running 31 October in Nottingham, by visiting bit.ly/ChamberOffice365
