REGENERATING THE EAST MIDLANDS THE HEADLINE RESULTS WERE:

• Unemployed or under-employed graduates found graduate-level work “on their doorstep”

• Local micro-businesses and SMEs found high calibre, graduate-level talent which they would not otherwise have found and with no recruitment costs to bear

• Businesses were able to trial and oversee a new recruit with a view to offering them a full-time position. In effect, a no obligation/try-before-you- buy approach to graduate recruitment, with almost all graduate placements being offered full-time positions as a consequence of the successful trial period

• Businesses reported they grew at a faster pace than would otherwise have happened

• Graduates reported they received more hands-on business experience in a micro business environment and a quicker career progression than their friends who joined blue-chip corporates

• Universities played an active role in local economic development and proactively intervening in the local economy and labour market

• More graduates were retained within their region.

Graduates can be unaware of the opportunities available with local employers, especially SMES While this scheme is a West Midlands-wide initiative, the

East Midlands too has a strong track record of its universities working in partnership with local businesses and with key local economic development agents, such as Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and local authorities. Indeed, universities have played an increasingly important role in becoming key delivery agents for business support schemes and developing networks through a variety of employer engagement activity. The overriding conclusion is about the importance of

information and awareness of graduate-level employment opportunities. Many businesses are not aware of, or have challenges to, recruiting graduates and welcome support in this regard. More pertinently, many graduates are unaware of the opportunities available with local employers, especially businesses at the smaller end of the spectrum. Anything that can help bridge that awareness gap should be welcomed and can help play some role towards retaining more graduates within our region.
