Beady-eyed foxes, horses in the rain and prized pikes were frequent additions to the once Poet Laureate’s work, his metaphors brimming with Mexborough charm. To commemorate the lasting legacy he left behind, a new statue was unveiled by Doncaster North MP, Ed Milliband, at the boy’s entrance to his old school as part of the Ted Hughes Poetry Festival in June.

Seated outside the grammar school, which has been sympathetically restored as

Mexborough Business Centre by Peter Newman, the statue was created by figurative sculptor, Jane Robbins, thanks to funding from the Arts Council and help by Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership. This summer, the figure will be moved inside MBC with tours being organised around his old classrooms.

Ted moved to Mexborough aged seven and it is widely accepted his early flair for poetry and story inspiration stemmed from his childhood spent in rural Old Denaby. The statue is part of a Ted Hughes Trail which will entice visitors into Mexborough to see the story behind how this young lad from Mexborough became one of the greatest poets to have lived.
