HEALTH & BEAUTY Slim into

Summer is here and although we start with good intentions of eating healthy, we can often fall at the first hurdle as soon as the bottle of wine is corked or a share-size bag of crisps opened to be hospitable for our guests.

But thanks to Slimming World, keeping on track with weight loss is never easier thanks to the simple art of food optimisation. From syns to speed foods, health extras to extra easy, Slimming World has helped change lives through weight loss – and most importantly, maintain their healthy, happy target weight.

Like many women, 64-year-old Christine Etherington has battled with her weight most of her life. After the birth of her son 34 years ago, her weight crept up on her, gaining four stone in a ten- year period.

“I tried every fad diet going and always seemed to gain more than I lost,” Chris says. Having yo-yo dieted for many years and her waistline fluctuating, she became depressed and

didn’t socialise, feeling frumpy and unattractive. “My get up and go had got up and gone. Even climbing the stairs was an effort and I struggled to keep my blood sugars to an acceptable level.” Needing to make a change once and for all, Chris joined the Conisbrough Slimming World group last September and felt welcomed by her consultant and fellow members from the very first visit. Once she got the hang of free foods and calculating syns in her head, Chris says the plan was easy to follow and fitted into family life – and she’s never felt hungry. There are no special or expensive foods to buy and daily treats can still be enjoyed when counted as syns, which Chris says she used for mayonnaise and chocolate.

“We could still eat together and enjoy the foods we love – spaghetti bolognaise is one of our favourite dishes and I was surprised pasta was one of the free foods. There are endless foods you can eat in unlimited quantities but nothing is really off limits. I never realised I could eat so much and still lose weight.”

Attending weekly group sessions to be weighed, Chris also got to spend time with her fellow slimmers to share recipes and advice while supporting each other through their inspiring weight loss journeys. While stepping on the scales is part of the deal with Slimming World, individual weights are never revealed, focusing more on the weekly progress in pounds. As everyone is going through the same process and facing the same challenges, nobody is ever critical, looking more to motivate each other to reach their targets.

Chris achieved her target weight in February and has lost 3st 2lb and dropped two dress sizes in five months.

“I look and feel ten years younger. I’m happier and more confident, plus my blood sugar and cholesterol levels are much better. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my consultant and group.”
