A Magna-ificent Summer
School may be over for the summer, but that doesn’t mean the kids can’t have fun and enjoy learning over the six week break.
Combine the fun of playtime with a hands-on education at Magna Science Adventure Centre. Known for its weird and wonderful insight into the world of science, head on down to Magna to marvel at the four elements needed for making steel and discover just how important
they are to the world around us. Feel the force of wind in the Air
Pavilion and see how the movement of air can create invisible sounds, help birds and planes fly, and swirl and twirl into vortexes.
Dig your way underground, tunnel through the earth and blast a rock
‘the Big Melt recreates the atmospheric steel making process with a powerful pyrotechnic and audio display’
face in the Earth Pavilion as you discover the hard work once faced by the likes of miners and foremen. Sail around the Water Pavilion and see how the cycle passes from sea to your taps. Keep it flowing through whirlpools and water wheels before getting superbly soaked by the cannons.
Dry off in the Fire Pavilion as you feel the heat of the mighty fire tornado. Watch how heat can change many materials and see the cables glow red.
Once the heart of steel making in Rotherham, visualise the colossal Steelos workforce forging through the former melting shop. Learn about the history of steel making in South Yorkshire on one of the guided Steel
Tours and visit the new Steelos Gallery which explores the heritage of the site. Using one of six former electric arc furnaces that once buzzed and burned, the Big Melt recreates the atmospheric steel making process with a powerful pyrotechnic and audio display to shake, rattle and roll the vast building.
Discover more about the steel making process with forge demonstrations. Understand the science behind the art of the Blacksmith and watch as they bend the metal into snails, swans and a whole host of other shapes. And don’t forget to take the fun outdoors with the Sci-tek and Aqua- tek play areas, open every day through the holidays.
