JULY 2017: ISSUE 100
On Wednesday 21st June at a meeting of the St Andrews Club, I was treated to a very interesting presentation on the Madras-Ki el School E xchange programme. The Kiel Exchange is the oldest school to school exchange in the United Kingdom and Germany, having started up 60 years ago in 1957. A number of celebrations are being held in St Andrews in June 2017 to mark this 60th anniversary of the exchange between Madras College and the Kieler Gelehrtenschule. The exchange was started as a result of correspondence between two historians, Dr John Thompson, who in 1955 had
just become Rector of Madras College, and Professor Karl Dietrich Erdmann, Professor of Modern History at Kiel University. Members will remember that we had a presentation about the exchange from twoMadras pupils and I was delighted to be able to present a donation of £100
towards the cost of this programme to Christina MacEachen Principal Teacher of Modern Languages. I also met four of the pupils, Angus Kennovin and Tess Lynn from Madras and Carlson Donner and Insa-Marie Sontag from Keil together with the Head Teacher Rainer Scoeneich and his wife Ingunde Keohler-Schoeneich.
