seniors, from those that would like to try rowing for the first time to the more experienced. There are social events during the year plus rowing rallies to various locations on the river. Interested? Then have a look at the website www.kingswearrc.co.uk or view Kingswear Rowing Club on Facebook or call Graham on 01803 882125 for more details. If you are frightened off by such heroic escapades, don’t worry - you don’t even have to row. You can become a break sweat, unless of course you forget the corkscrew!

Kingswear Family Fun Day

Remember last year’s egg throwing, bubbles blown the size of Anglesey, an over-flowing bar, food sizzling in the shrubbery, beautifully-behaved dogs (ha ha!), gleaming classic cars, the stupid ducks in the creek and the sun scorching the proverbial grass in the field? Well. it’s all going to happen again but with more too. Get yer diaries out and mark down Saturday September 2nd from 12:00pm to 4:30pm. There will of course be stalls, games and crafts. The classic cars and the fun dog show will feature again and Rowcroft will benefit from the generosity of the community with the duck race which, raised over £1,500 last year! There will be a disco, Bollywood Dancing, a skittle challenge and for the first time we are running THE GREAT KINGSWEAR BAKE OFF to showcase all the creative culinary talent in the village.

Plenty of food will be available - curry, a lamb roast and a BBQ and of course Percy’s Bar will be open all day to ensure dehydration is not an issue! This is a special village event and we would like to involve all the community. If you feel you could offer any help or support either as a volunteer or through sponsorship or raffle prizes please contact Jan on 752928 or Penny on 882187 who will be delighted to hear from you. Together we make KFFD even more successful than last year..... wall to wall sunshine has already been booked ... and eggs will be thrown!

World-wide Knit in

Public Day On saturday June 10th Knitters from Kingswear , Dartmouth and beyond joined forces with knitters all over the world to take part in World Wide Knit in Public Day or WWKIP. This initiative was started in Denmark in 2008 and now has 55 participating countries.

spinning wheel and many blanket squares and beanie hats were produced for an orphanage in South Africa.

So a huge thank you to everyone who took part –and we will do it all again next year.

Discordant Note After a really superb Dartmouth music festival this May, which was enjoyed by so many of us in Kingswear, what a real shame that after the last notes had just died down some criminal idiocy was carried-out in Kingswear. It seems that several very drunk youths got into a car down in The Square and then drove madly up on to Higher Contour Rd. Here they tried to turn round because of a blue van which had been simply abandoned in the middle of the road, near the top of Wood Lane. In so doing they smashed into at least two cars, writing both of them off. This has caused great hardship to both owners, as I can readily vouch, and left people with real difficulties in getting to work.

Our chosen public place was the Flavel foyer and Coffee Culture.. a wise decision as the glorious June summer weather fell somewhat short of the mark om that day. Local crafters and café customers came together to share fun and friendship with copious coffee and cake... but as knitting has been scientifically proven to burn 110 calories an hour no damage was done to anyone’s waistline! Non knitters gained a skill both with knitting needles and a

Not only was there damage to cars, another (or who knows, maybe the same group) caused great damage to the community bus and assaulted the volunteer driver who was then hospitalised. This is a very low form of behaviour. One only hopes that when they sobered up, they reflected on their actions and felt real shame. Their community is certainly deeply ashamed of them. One slight sliver of good news is that the driver of the offending car which caused so much damage has been identified. He tried to make out that his car had been stolen, which it hadn’t and, as a start, is being tried for wasting police time. We only hope that he will be made to pay for some of the awful damage for which he’s responsible. If he shows his face in Kingswear in the near future he may have it re-arranged!•
