78 FIVE OF THE BEST South Devon
With a booming tourist industry and rich heritage South Devon has some simply stunning attractions. Here’s five of the best to visit this summer.
National Marine Aquarium The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the largest public
aquarium in the uK, with more than 300,000 visitors every year. As a self-funded charity, the aquarium is a hive of education, conservation and research activities. The Atlantic Ocean Exhibit is the largest and deepest tank in the uK, with an impressive 2.5 million litres of water. This tank is also now home to ‘Friday’, a green turtle on loan this year from Bournemouth Oceanarium. He joins many inhabitants, including sand tiger, lemon and nurse sharks and huge stingrays. And among many other tanks and exhibits is the Eddystone Reef tank, with the UK’s largest single-tank viewing panel – an impressive fishy cinema screen! The aquarium is open everyday. See

Woodlands When a day at a theme park calls Woodlands
is right up there with the best. It’s got tons of water rides, slides, playzones, peddle boats, as well as numerous animals to visit, pet and feed. There’s also entertainment with robots, clowns and science shows. And for the total thrill seeker there’s a stomach churning sounding new ride this year called Vertigo. Located on the main road into Dartmouth. Woodlands is open everyday. Visit www.

Buckfast Abbey Known globally for its Buckfast Tonic Wine and bee keeping,
this Benedictine monk community was founded nearly 1,000 years ago. The original abbey stood for 500 years before Henry VIII closed it. The present day monks returned in 1882 and rebuilt the abbey on its medieval foundations, it’s tower an impressive beacon on the edge of Dartmoor. The place exudes calm and tranquility, whether exploring the church building or its adjoining gardens. The gardens have been recognised this year at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival, putting them firmly on the horticultural map.A café serves lunches and cream teas, with delightful outdoor seating overlooking the abbey and gardens.
