33 Star Wars phenomenon continues I

n most generations there will be a defining social event that resonates and continues to

carry momentum well past its initial debut. Bearnes Hampton & Little- wood’s recent Sporting & Collectors’ auction proved that the Star Wars phenomenon which began 40 years ago in 1977, looks set to continue. Included in the sale were a number of original figures in their unopened bubble packets. Many recognisable characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Darth Vader and other favou- rites instantly rekindled childhood imaginations of galaxies far, far, away as well as the memories of seeing the original films in the cinema in the late 70s. The figures included in the sale dated from the release of the third of the original films ‘Return of the Jedi’ (originally called ‘Revenge of the Jedi’ in production at Pinewood) but still brought bidders to the Exeter sale- rooms in person and online. While the popular figures like Darth Vader and Chewbacca sold well, it was some of the more unusual characters that fetched the highest prices on the day. A figure of the droid bounty hunter IG-88 sold for £120 and a French pack- aged figure of a Jawa sold for £150. It was however one of the ‘blink and you missed them’ characters from Return of the Jedi

Have you a small fortune tucked away in your attic?

that surpassed

them all. The character of Saelt-Marae is better known to Star Wars enthusiasts (though I’d probably refer to myself more as a ‘nerd’) as ‘Yak Face’. If you are still none the wiser then it’s understandable as one of his scenes was cut from the film, this making the figure a rarity amongst collectors’. Two unpackaged figures along a figure of ‘Amanaman’ and ‘eV9D9’ sold for £350. To some it is always a mystery as to why fans are so obsessively dedicated to films

like Star Wars, yet perhaps if you are not quite so intrigued, you may well have a small fortune in your attic, especially consid- ering that some of the earliest figures in mint condition have been selling for £10,000 and above.•
