What do you drink with your picnic? What do you drink with your picnic? Wine edUCaTion

In April, Jonathan was given a last minute opportunity to fly off to Bordeaux to taste the 2016 en Primeur. En Primeur, in layman’s terms, is buying wine for future consumption.

There’s not many weekends during the year when we can bask in a Mediterranean climate with reassuringly

This means experts from around the world descend on Bordeaux to taste barrel samples from the 2016 harvest. Using their expertise & experienced palates, they select wines they believe to already show a good structure and an excellent balance of fruit and acidity – the perfect recipe needed for claret to improve with age.

This year there is much enthusiasm because last year’s harvest is claimed to have been one of the best for a good many years. Wine lovers get very excited about buying “En Primeur” because it means that you can own wines which will never come onto the market again at the offer price. Some of the wines may only have to be laid down for 3 years before you can enjoy something very special. There are wines from some châteaux that will go on improving into the 2040’s! If we have whetted your appetite to know more, we have a brochure with 21 selected wines which we can send you electronically or by post.

With the popping of corks, there was a great festival feeling throughout Dartmouth that weekend particularly in the Mayor’s Avenue Gardens as dozens of music-lov- ers sat around on an array of colourful rugs surrounded by many other like-minded people. Food and wine were being handed around from well-stocked picnic baskets as everyone soaked up the sunshine and the sounds coming from the bandstand. This tranquil scene of an early summer reminded us of how lovely it is to share a bottle of wine with friends whether in a stunning setting by the River Dart or in our own back gardens.
