Name: Simon Hardiman Company: West Midlands Fire Service

Job Title: Group Commander Head of Fire Safety and Projects

How did it all start? On a personal basis, it was a career that I had always admired as a child. I was lucky enough to achieve my goal of joining West Midlands Fire Service in 2001.

What’s your greatest achievement so far? Attaining my current role within the organisation and the ability to influence the future direction of the Service.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Risks I have taken have been attributed to operational incidents. However risk assessment has directed activity, with crew safety and public safety paramount.

What keeps you awake at night? Thinking about how to deliver excellence to our communities with value for money in mind.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Nothing, I am happy with all aspects of my life.

What has surprised you most in your job? The variation and range of

services delivered by West Midlands Fire Service.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Have an open mind and identify opportunity for continuous improvement.

Which business do you most admire? Businesses that are courageous in their approach to change and are happy to take measured risks for improved performance.

What exciting projects is your business working on? Working closely with business to provide advice, education and support to enable business growth and development within the region.

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? The opportunity to develop working relationships with business and we are utilising GBCC to create contacts.
