Pilots who were among the unsung heroes of D-Day have been honoured at a special ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The pilots were from the Glider
Pilot Regiment, who flew their flimsy wooden craft on several key missions of the Second World War, including D-Day and Operation Market Garden, an unsuccessful operation to by the Allies to end the conflict early. This operation was memorably made into a Hollywood blockbuster, A Bridge Too Far. Among the glider pilots at the
Staffordshire ceremony was Denzil Cooper from Sutton Coldfield, a recent recipient of France’s Légion d'Honneur in recognition of his contribution to the liberation of France, where he took part in the D-Day assault of Normandy. His 68ft Horsa Glider was
constructed almost entirely out of plywood, yet it survived landing at 80mph and being subject to vicious

Regiment were killed during the operation to secure bridges that were vital to the Allies’ strategy.
Denzil returned to England by sea and three months later took part in Operation Market Garden, where a lump of shrapnel became embedded in his leg. The Glider Pilot Regiment was
established in 1942, it was formed of volunteers from other sections of the Army. Their loaded gliders were towed into enemy airspace by the

RAF aircraft, whereupon the pilots would attempt to touch down behind enemy lines. The Glider Pilot Regiment was
disbanded in 1957. A regimental association provided support to veterans until 2016 when the organisation was wound down due to the declining number of veterans. Denzil said: “We didn’t have time
to be scared, we were too busy doing our jobs. It’s only now that you realise how lucky you were to have made it. The whole regiment was lucky. After the assault we were told that they had expected more than 50 per cent of us not to return. “I’ve returned to Normandy
several times and my thoughts have always turned to those who never managed to return home. There are so few of us left now, I hope this new annual service will preserve the enduring legacy of those who answered the call to serve their country and laid down their lives in pursuit of freedom.”
