Solihull Solihull Chamber Patrons

It’s full steam ahead for college campus plans

Solihull College principal John Callaghan has outlined his plans for opening a new campus near the UK Central Arden Cross HS2 Interchange Station. Arden Cross station will be the

point at which the line from London is divided and the high- speed trains will whizz up to either Leeds or Manchester, stopping at a number of towns and cities on the way. HS2 trains are due to start

running through Arden Cross in nine years’ time, and Mr Callaghan said the project would be a major opportunity for the educational sector. He said: “I would like to think we could have a

presence at Arden Cross as we can offer higher education and advanced training including digital technologies. The new HS2 station is ideally located for an educational presence and we could

see a new campus there at some stage.” “I’m very optimistic about HS2. I do understand it will be disruptive and we need to consider the people who will be displaced by the project but for far too long this country has been focused on the South East and if we want to re-balance the economy then we can’t do it with the current infrastructure. “I see HS2 as a huge opportunity with the Arden Cross proposals and the

Interchange in Solihull being the first stop from London.

“There is a feeling of a renaissance in the Midlands that is unique. It’s the most

exciting place to be. We need to capitalise on this.”

John Callaghan: HS2 a ‘huge opportunity’

In Brief

A Solihull accountancy firm has held a staff conference as part of its tenth birthday celebrations, to look back upon its achievements during the past decade. The firm is Prime, who also used the

occasion to present long service awards to those who have been with the company since it launched. Prime director Jamie Skelding said: “As a

professional services business, our people are our most valuable asset. The progression of our staff is a key factor in our plans for growth.”

Businesses are set to tee off at the Solihull Chamber of Commerce golf day on 15 June. Teams will be competing for first prize and

the Sydney Mitchell winners’ shield at the event which is being held at the Marriot Forest of Arden Hotel Golf & Country Club. A presentation dinner will take place in the evening. The event costs £60 for members and

Future Faces members, or £70 for non- members. A place at the evening dinner is £20. The golf day includes the Sydney Mitchell

Shield for the winning team, as well as a range of other prizes.
