Abergavenny Milford Ladies
1 1
SATURDAY, January 21,
saw Milford Ladies travel to Abergavenny after previously losing 5-2 to the hosts earlier in the season. It was a highly competitive game
where both sides looked dangerous on the attack. Milford were denied early on by some good saves by the home keeper but made no mistake mid-way through the half with a well-played ball into the D by Rachel Coe for youngster Meg Jones to finish from close range. The visitors moved the ball well
and created some great chances which they frustratingly failed to convert. A rare mistake by the Milford defence gave Abergavenny their only opportunity of the half in which they won the goal mouth scramble and found the backboard. The second half saw more of the
same with Milford creating several chances and the Abergavenny keeper making a fantastic save to deny Rachel Coe from adding to the score. Although Milford pushed forward and pressurised the visitors, they failed
Captain Emma Summons: Gets the ball away to goal scorer Rachel Coe
to capitalise on the possession to find the winner. Abergavenny did threaten on the
counter attack but a classy defensive display led by Jane Jordan ensured Milford secured a point. Milford Captain Emma Summons
stated: “With the chances we created, it was disappointing not to take the three points but we played some good hockey and there are plenty of
positives to take from the result, and with a run of home games to come, it bodes well.” Squad: Emma Summons, Yasmin
Riggs, Vicki John, Kate Farr, Jane Jordan, Charlotte Davies, Sian Davies, Georgia Davies, Rachel Coe, Meg Jones, Steph Layton, Kasey Arran. Milford’s next fixture is on
Saturday (Feb 4), at home against Risca with a 2pm push back.
Alma cling on to top spot ROUND 10 of the Haverfordwest
Coin Machine-sponsored Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Quiz League saw the league leaders from the Alma cling on to the top position with yet another drawn game. This time it was against the challenging
Charlton B who themselves move up to second in the table with this result.

two places, Rob managed to outscore the other two, and between them they posted a reasonable target score of 73 points.
Following were Mike Skidmore,
Kevin Dyer, and Nigel Taylor - none of whom could cope with the course (55 points) but had a good laugh as they went round. Nigel did redeem his round with an excellent shot on the 12th which won him the Nearest the Pin prize. Next, Steve Jones, Allan Gawith,

20 KILGETTY SOCIETY
players were delighted to welcome the sun when their January meeting was held at Trefloyne Golf Club on Tuesday, January 17. Play was still difficult, however, as
those who wintered overseas and back for Christmas will quickly testify. First out off the first tee were Keith
Leverton, Rob Nixon, and Wynne Richards. Despite a finger broken in
and John Richards battled away to a new lead of 77 points. John, however, needed a recharge after his Christmas excesses as he petered out to a poor score by his standards, but he was no way near the wooden spoon. Last off this tee were Barry Neale,
Graham Longster (who did well to beat Darrell for the Longest Drive on the 17th), and new member John Hammond. John played well for his first outing with the Society, and with a good score from Barry who came second with 31, the team shot (stumbled) into the lead with 79 points. Would this be beaten by those four
balls who had started on the 10th tee? Darrell Willington, Martin Davies, Tom Woods and Kelvin Boughey were
first off. Despite valiant efforts by the first
three, Kelvin’s performance meant it was curtains for them as they only averaged 63 points. Kelvin duly won the Wooden Spoon, although he was closely pushed by John James in the last group out. His compatriots, Dave Green,
Andy Bevans, and Roger Handcock, did somewhat better to raise their average to 58 which, considering Dave came third with 31 points and Roger won with 32 points, just about sums up John’s game! Better luck next time. Back in front of the roaring log
fire in the clubhouse, a delicious meal was enjoyed by the players, who were joined by other members who had been unable to play that day. Prizes were awarded to the above winners and also for two twos - by Roger on his way to first place and by Martin on his way to the bar. Steve won the 20+ handicap prize and the day ended with Kelvin requesting a cupboard for his collection of spoons. The next fixture is at Cardigan Golf
Course on the Wednesday (Feb 8). All are welcome – there is no joining fee; pay on the day. More information can be found at

This comes about due to the Golf Club
surprisingly losing at home to the visiting St Govan’s Inn team. The second round was all about answers
that contained the word ‘say’ and with both teams slipping into gear quickly the F&L managed to steal a couple of points back to end the round 30-19. The third round was all about captains and the F&L team captain got off to a poor start when he could not ID the first Black Captain of the English football team.
After the break, the picture round was all
about dingbats on well-known books where the Oak were better able to unscramble the pictures and apply them to literary publications and outscored the F&L to enter the penultimate round 58-52 to the good.
This fifth round contained answers that
all had the word ‘smith’ in them and with both teams sharing maximum points the game went into the final round with the Oak leading 73-67, still anybody’s game. With the Oak getting their first question
right and the F&L captain failing to identify a horse race for Fillies - aka the Oaks! - the home team cruised into an unassailable lead, finally running out winners by 18 points. So the week’s scores read as follows;
Station B 102, Charlton A 78, Golf Club 82, St Govan’s Inn 92, First & Last B, 85 Station A 97, Charlton B 87, Alma 87, Oak 97, and First & Last A 79. These results see the Alma on 21pts, Charlton B 19, Golf Club and Oak 18 and both Station sides on 15, so it is still all there to play for.
