21 News MP organises first Tenby Fiſty Plus Fair Welsh Dragon Boat Championship supports mental health

Fifty Plus Fair: Simon Hart MP with colleague Daisy Allen at a previous pensioner’s fair

ADVICE, information, support

and cups of tea will all be on offer at Simon Hart MP’s first ever Fifty Plus Fair next Friday (Feb 10). The event is aimed at anyone

aged over 50, their family, friends and carers, and takes place at Deer Park Baptist Church Hall between 10am and 1pm. “There will be a number of

stalls there manned by organisations including the Fire Brigade, British Red Cross, Shelter Cymru and the County Council,” explained Mr Hart. “As well as practical advice on

matters such as pensions and rent, there will also be emotional support on offer from charities including the Stroke and Alzheimer’s Associations. “Prime Cymru will also be there to talk about setting up a

business later in life, you can learn about volunteering opportunities in Pembrokeshire with PAVS and there will also be mental health advice on offer from West Wales Action on Mental Health.” Also present will be the local

policing team from Tenby and U3A to reveal more about local learning opportunities. The Town Rider Service will

be operating that day in Tenby, Saundersfoot and Kilgetty and can be booked by calling 0800 783 1584, preferably 48 hours in advance. Mr Hart added: “Everyone is

welcome and there will be free refreshments. We hope that it will be a good opportunity for people to meet friends, discover new information and feel supported.”

On the water: The event this year will fund mental health charities THIS year, the Rotary Club

of Narberth and Whitland has chosen to use the proceeds of the Welsh Dragon Boat Championship to support charities involved with mental health. These charities include MIND,

Adlerian Society of Wales, Working to Become Dementia Friendly and HAFAL. 2017 is the fourth year that the

event is being staged in Pembrokeshire and, already, 18 teams have been identified and they are actively

recruiting their supporters. Over £40,000 has been raised

during the past three years and this year, the club president, Mary Adams, is hoping that the proceeds will benefit some individuals and organisations in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire who have mental health issues. The organisers of the event say:

“This year it will be much easier and cheaper to enter a team. The number of people in each team has been reduced from 17 to 15 and the combined entry fee and individual fundraising target

has been reduced from £65 per head to £50 per head. “During the day on Sunday,

May 28, all children’s rides and entertainment will be absolutely free and there is no entry fee for them to get into the country park and reservoir. There is also free overnight camping on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28.

“Full details can be obtained

from Rotarian Steve Lewis on 07932 798 910 or email Stephen.lewis54@ btinternet.com.”
