UK to implement new PTD despite vote to leave EU

The government has confirmed it will implement the new Package Travel Directive (PTD) despite the UK’s decision to leave the EU, but will not consult the industry until “late autumn”.
That will leave just a year to bring in new regulations, posing problems for businesses to adjust. A spokesman for the new Department for Business, Energy and Industry Strategy (BEIS) confirmed the new timetable to
Travel Weekly. BEIS replaced the former Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) following the change of prime minister on July 13 and is now responsible for implementing the directive. The spokesman said: “The department still plans on consulting. We’re looking at late autumn, certainly by the end of the year.” John Cox, chairman of the Air

the government to act quickly. Cox said: “The later the consultation, the less time to implement the PTD and the less time the industry has to make changes to systems. We’re very concerned. It’s a real problem for tour operators.” Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “It is essential businesses are given sufficient time to adapt to changes brought about by the new regulations, even while recognising holiday protection arrangements may change as the
UK prepares to leave the EU.” The new PTD was adopted last
November and a consultation was expected by March, in tandem with a Department for Transport consultation on Atol reform. But the announcement of the EU referendum in February led to a delay. In May, a BIS representative told an Abta Travel Law Seminar the consultations would be in June and September either side of Parliament’s summer recess. The timetable has now slipped again.

Renewed warnings that sharing holiday plans on social media could invalidate home insurance are not expected to suppress holidaymakers’ eagerness to post and tweet about their trips.

strategies would be seriously undermined if people became more cautious about sharing details of their travels on sites such as Facebook. However, they doubt insurance
firms can rely on terms and condi- tions that require policyholders to take ‘reasonable care’ to refuse payouts in the event of a burglary. holiday snaps is too much these days. Tourist boards and travel firms all want you to send out user-generated content while you’re away. It’s what everyone strives for.” Darren Hepburn, director of social agency Chilli Twist, said at this time of year a significant
proportion of posts on social media were related to travel. He suggested insurers that clamped down on holiday posts would have to do so whenever a homeowner left their house. “It’s not written into insurance
T&Cs that you have to be in your house at all times,” he said. Nathan Midgley, editor of
marketing agency Melt Content, added: “If you post online, it’s common sense to assume it’s going to be seen by someone outside your social circle. But I suspect people will keep posting.”
