The failure of Lowcost shows it is impossible to know how a company based overseas is trading and whether the licence given to it to trade is worth the paper it is printed on. Lowcost advertised that it was “fully licensed” by the government in Palma. If that had the same value as an Atol, perhaps we wouldn’t be where we are today. Indeed, the new 2015 Package Travel Directive positively encourages companies to cross-border trade and use a single licence to do so. The theory is great; in practice, we now discover the licence held by Lowcost was intended to protect Spanish customers only.

Is it not time for government to legislate that every traveller should have compulsory financial protection insurance?

You could then shut down the expensive Atol scheme and have a list of government- licensed insurance companies to issue policies, with a cost per head that would be no more than £2.50. This would grow the market by enabling starts-ups to break into the sector. PAUL DENDLE

Achievement Award is ‘absolute dream’
I just wanted to thank the judges so much for choosing me to be Leisure Agent of the Year at the Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Awards. It is really hard to put into words what it means to me. The awards night was an absolute dream; I am still pinching myself now to make sure it was real. I am honoured, humbled, delighted, proud and excited, to name a few of the emotions that I’ve been feeling. When I heard Peter Dickson say the words “and the winner is, from The Travel Village...” I was overwhelmed. It is a moment I will never forget. A couple of the judges came up to me afterwards to congratulate me, which meant a lot to me. Other highlights of the night had to be Boogie Storm, Tony Hadley and, of course, the lovely presenter, Stephen Mulhern.
