New pontoons for Poole Yacht Club P

oole Yacht Club in Dorset has been supplied with the walkways and pontoons necessary for the major

refurbishment of its marina by Walcon Marine Ltd. This is a substantial facility with berths for up to 400 boats. The four main pontoons, the longest of which is 147 metres, are being completely replaced and fitted with 163 new finger piers plus a small number of existing units. One of the walkways running alongside the inside of the breakwater also received 11 new fingers. All the pontoons are Walcon System 2000 units, fabricated

in aluminium and fitted with hardwood decking. Some System 21 equipment has also been supplied

for areas where pre-existing pontoons have been used. Walcon has supplied and

delivered the new pontoon equipment and the club members are undertaking the installation work over the remainder of 2016. The initial phase has already been completed. The layout of the marina remains unchanged, enabling the existing piles to be re-used. The members are also removing and disposing of the old unwanted equipment. Work began in January and

should be completed by the end of the year.

MID metering becomes mandatory New President for

British Marine

After October, 2016, it will be mandatory that all kWh meters installed at marinas will need to have Measurement Instrument Directive (MID) approval. The aim of the directive is to create a single market in measuring instruments for the benefit of manufacturers and users across Europe. Rolec Services Ltd of Boston in

the UK, one of the world’s leading specialists in the manufacture, supply and installation of marina service pedestals, recently confirmed that it has invested heavily to develop a range of solutions for marinas complete with full MID approved metering. Martin Georgeson, Rolec’s

Sales Director, commented: “We are working closely with many of the UK’s marinas to ensure that their current and future electrical metering systems fully comply with current and future regulations. “Many marinas throughout the

UK are still basing their electricity billing systems on older style, reconditioned, mechanical meters, some of which have been installed for ten years or more and which were already up to eight-ten years old when installed. “As the new MID metering

legislation comes into force later MARINA EURO-REPORT • JUNE 2016

David Pougher, Principal of Deep Consultancy, has taken over the well-respected role of British Marine President from Fiona Pankhurst, who has held the position since 2014. During her time as President,

this year, this is proving to be the ideal opportunity to renew the marina’s metering systems to the new MID-approved versions and become fully compliant with the new regulations.” Martin continued: “As a result of

our significant buying power and our investment in both the MID approval process and the products we manufacture, we are able to supply new MID-approved metering at a similar price point to the non-MID approved meters. “In addition to manufacturing

and supplying marina service pedestals with built-in MID- approved metering, we can also supply marina owners with the MID-approved meters themselves for retro-fitting into their existing systems.”

Fiona led the organisation forward and was instrumental in seeing British Marine unveil a strong new identity that stands out within the context of modern brands in the marine sector. Launched last year, the brand was the result of a year-long exercise, which was undertaken in-house and overseen by Fiona and the British Marine Management Board. It strongly connects the organisation’s members with Britain’s reputation for quality, excellent design and innovation, giving British Marine the opportunity to promote what is great about the industry.

As immediate Past

President, Fiona remains on the management board of British Marine, enabling continuity of the strength of purpose she has helped to build. Incoming President, David, has been involved in the UK marine

industry for over 35 years, retiring from his position at Yamaha as Divisional Manager, Marine and All Terrain Business in 2013. He then set-up Deep Consultancy, a business consultancy specialising in SMEs, through which he continued to maintain his connections with the marine industry. He has had extensive involvement with British Marine over the years, both as a member and also through a number of the organisation’s groups and committees.
